@mcmotors23 @graeme_from_IT @theSNP My son got straight A’s across all of his Highers and Nat-5s Mike. He can’t get better grades than that, he may be in clearing because his first choice Edinburgh has asked for *further* A’s, which we don’t have results for yet. You do know it’s 2026 and not 1966, right?

@btcwbtcw @graeme_from_IT @theSNP Even if Scottish students’ families offered 10k right now for the places there is no mechanism to do so, they’re excluded in favour of English and more often Chinese students.

@WingsScotland @Shatterface This was one of my eldest’s two clearing options, he doesn’t have his results yet but clearly Heriot Watt is off the list leaving only Strathclyde. The SNP are reserving these places for international Chinese students. Now I need to prepare for him staying home another year. 🫪

@Irlheff @JH_Investments I would rather they just shrank the blob and stopped paying for a huge segment of the population to be terminally inactive. Singapore seems to manage better than us across every metric on less than half the tax receipts, whilst being no.1 for GDP per capita.

@_Lars_Johnson_ @JH_Investments Well its both issues. More spending and less income. Has to be made up somewhere. Just think how much extra government would have if tax rates were still 40% or more

The UK’s 40% tax rate was meant for the wealthy. Now nearly 1 in 5 taxpayers pay it. In the 1990s it was closer to 1 in 30. At what point does a “tax on the rich” become a tax on people with a good salary rather than real wealth?

@JamesMelville Nikita Bier is trying to turn X into TMZ. Soon the ability to post your own words will be removed and it’ll just be a read-only feed of viral slop, celebrity news and reaction videos.

This platform is getting worse every day. Why on earth have X now removed our chosen retweets from being shown on our own feeds? Surely that’s only going to disincentivise retweeting and therefore, reduce overall views on this platform. It’s so counterproductive.

@Irlheff @JH_Investments 26.5% for the majority of SMEs, 25% only kicks in above a certain profit level. They’re not scrambling for higher taxes because businesses got a break on corporation tax. They’re doing it because we have the largest government in history spending the highest % of GDP since 1945.

@_Lars_Johnson_ @JH_Investments It was ,52% back in 1980s and has dropped as low as 19%, but back to 25% now. How much corporate tax has been given away to companies because of this? That has to be made up somewhere

Scots claiming they have more in common with Norway than British nations is top-level cringe. The only Scandinavian countries are Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, which share a peninsula and closely related Germanic languages. Then there’s the Nordic countries, which consist of the core Scandinavian nations plus Finland and Iceland. Scotland isn’t in the picture. At all.

@SoveyX The iPhone curve only enhances a trend you see starting in the late 90s when the boomers started construction of the mile-high iron fortification around their gerontocracy. Kids aren't driving because boomers made cars unaffordable, just as teens have nowhere to go to have sex.

It's interesting that the three things that used to define being a teenager, getting your license, drinking, and getting laid, all started falling at the same time. That wasn't a coincidence. It isn't three trends. It's one. For most of American history, being seventeen meant leaving the house. The point was to get out. Into a car, into a parking lot, into someone's parents house while they were gone. Teenage life ran on boredom and proximity. You did reckless things because the alternative was sitting at home, and sitting at home was unbearable. Then around 2012, sitting at home stopped being unbearable. The smartphone didn't make teenagers responsible. It gave them somewhere else to be. The boredom that used to push them outside, toward cars and parties and each other, finally had a cheaper outlet. Every behavior that required leaving the house bent downward at once. We keep calling this a healthier generation. Less pregnancy, less DUI, fewer of the disasters that used to end a young life early. In the narrow sense, it is. But we didn't get wiser. We became antisocial. Because of a phone. Which you are viewing this on right now.

@Irlheff @JH_Investments UK corporation tax is 26.5% broseph. Technically 5th highest out of 32 European countries when you consider most businesses are SMEs, or 7th highest for large corporations.

@ChrisGwinnLA Because the vast majority of 'users' on X are not people, but if @nikitabier did anything about it, the investors would see the real active daily users and shit the bed. You can spend a year here without gaining followers because the 'views' aren't people reading what you post.

Why is it so much harder to get non-bot followers on X than other platforms? For context, I daily post the same content on all the big platforms (except cesspit Bluesky) and engage way more here, yet I average only a couple new followers a day - sometimes none. On FB and IG, I get dozens - sometimes over a hundred - per day. What is it about X that makes people much less likely to follow others?

@CutMyTaxUK I'm one of those people, there is simply no point in working any harder or any longer since at that point I'm just working for the Treasury. They have no understanding of economics. Fewer things are being made, fewer services are provided, and most often in the highest skills.

Cut My Tax
Cut My Tax@CutMyTaxUK·
The £100,000 tax trap is pushing increasing numbers of GPs to work part-time. Now only 19% of GPs work full time, with the figure declining to 11% for the under 40s Unlike many salaried employees, GP partners & many sessional GPs have considerable control over their hours, making labour supply relatively flexible. Unsurprisingly they choose to work less to avoid paying tax of 60% or more. The 60% rate at £100K is an inefficient policy that restricts the availability of medical care. It falls on workers who have scarce professional skills, can often choose their hours & are in occupations with significant shortages. Removing the tax penalty at £100k would result in some 400 additional full-time-equivalent GPs & around 2m additional GP appointments a year.

@Polymarket I mean if they wanted to test human isolation in an uninhabitable wasteland with no atmosphere and non-flushing toilets they'd save a lot of money by having the volunteers spend a year in Birmingham.

@RetroCoast This is almost all married men that I know. I was one of them until I left a decade ago to save my mental health. Before any feminists jump in, I’m the primary carer of two healthy straight-A’s 6ft2” teens who mostly avoid their mum while she plays tennis with Prosecco ladies.

Typing a message a moment ago on my iPhone 15 and this typing lag is astonishing. If I was to type in an exact pulsed rhythm of keys, the feedback click sounds like a Geiger counter, just random pauses and lags then 3 click sounds catching up all at once. Atrocious. @tim_cook

If you enable Sound in the @apple iOS keyboard, you can actually hear the keyboard input failing as you type. Instead of the click sound matching your key presses on time, it delays and catches up inconsistently as though the input polling is extremely non linear @AppleSupport

There was an article few years back about how iPhones would change future body shapes into hunched backs with neck humps and claw hands. I'm sitting in the cafe just now and a plump woman around 30 came in with this exact body shape, yikes!
