Marx dreamed of a world where you wouldn't be pigeonholed by your job. As he put it, a man could hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, and critique ideas at dinner without ever being a hunter, fisherman, or critic. Thus far, only AI has lived up to this dream, as it's employed to make art and bomb countries without ever being an artist or a pilot.

Der durchschnittliche Deutsche Vollzeit-Arbeitnehmer zahlt 2-3x so viel Steuern und Abgaben wie ein Deutscher Bauer im 16. Jahrhundert, arbeitet pro Jahr doppelt so viele Stunden wie er und ist dabei pro Arbeitsstunde ca. 60-100x produktiver (Ja, wirklich). Der durchschnittliche Arbeitnehmer von Heute ist aufgrund von moderner Technik, Digitalisierung, Automatisierung, Optimierungen von Arbeitsprozessen etc. auch 3-5x produktiver als noch vor 50 Jahren. Es ist genug Geld für alles da, was wir brauchen. Es ist nur nicht da, wo es wir es brauchen. Niemand muss noch mehr arbeiten. Es ist sogar ziemlich egal ob die Leute 30, 40, 50 oder 73,5 Stunden pro Woche arbeiten, weil wir bereits mehr als genug Mittel haben um jedem ein würdevolles und sorgenfreies Leben zu ermöglichen, es wird den Menschen nur gezielt von der Politik verwehrt. Alles was das arbeitende Volk jetzt noch zusätzlich erwirtschaften würde, würde ohnehin bei den Reichen 0,1% landen. Selbst wenn ab Morgen jeder doppelt so viel arbeiten würde, hätte die breite Bevölkerung nicht mehr Wohlstand. Steuern, Abgaben und Preise würden halt einfach nur so nach oben hin angepasst werden, dass nichts bei dem ankommt, der es erwirtschaftet. Fehlender bezahlbarer Wohnraum, fehlende medizinische Grundversorgung, Kinder die in Armut aufwachsen und auf warme Mahlzeiten verzichten müssen, Rentner die 40 Jahre eingezahlt haben und trotzdem zusätzlich jobben und Pfandflaschen sammeln müssen um über die Runden zu kommen, marodes Schienennetz, kaputte Straßen, Jugendliche die keine Therapieplätze bekommen - Diese Dinge sind nicht das tragische Ergebnis einer ineffizienten Bevölkerung, die zu wenig und nicht hart genug arbeitet, sondern ein gezielt herbeigeführter Zustand, um ein System zu konstruieren, welches ein paar wenigen Reichen dient und nur aufrecht erhalten werden kann, wenn genug Andere darunter leiden. Den Menschen in Deutschland geht’s nicht zunehmend beschissen, weil unsere Regierung und unser Kanzler unfähig sind, ganz im Gegenteil - Es geht den Menschen immer beschissener, weil Regierung und Kanzler genau das machen, wofür sie von den oberen 0,1% installiert wurden. Genau so wie die Regierung davor, und die davor, und die davor… Demokratie, Parteien, Wahlen und Gesetze sind ein einziger Trickbetrug. Deutschland ist verbrannte Erde, hier wird die nächsten 30 Jahre kein Baum mehr wachsen.

@nntaleb It's precisely because we have "become" European. People dislike that which they dislike within themselves. Greece is more levantine than European. Athens is more Beirut than Berlin. No amount of self-debasement is too great if it helps in our self-deception.

I don't think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran. This is a picture of Tehran. For you uneducated, untraveled, never-served, warhawks licking your chops at the thought of bombing it. It's not some low population desert. There are families, children, family pets. Regular working class people with dreams. You're sick to want war. Tehran is a city of nearly 10,000,000 people. Imagine nuking Washington, Berlin, Paris, London, or beyond, bombed with nuclear weapons. I gave up my diplomatic career to leak this information. I suspended my duties so as not to be part of or a witness to this crime against humanity, in an attempt to prevent a nuclear winter before it is too late. Yesterday, nearly ten million people protested “No Kings” in the United States. The possibility of the use of nuclear weapons must be taken very seriously. It's dangerous. Act now. Spread this message worldwide. Take the streets. Protest for our humanity and future. Only the people can stop it. History will remember us.

Well, actually this is an existential threat to him. The Al Saud might not survive at all if the US is unable to subdue Iran. The entire world of the oil monarchies may collapse. The bandwagon scenario I painted in my note today is a rosy scenario for them.

@DimitrisPapail No my point is precisely that you’re not really free to choose at this point in time. Projects on e.g. diff. geometry or semantics & pragmatics in dialogue modelling will be funded less than diffusion and LLMs. Some might but will be far and few in between.

Prediction: In ~3 years academia will be the most desirable place to do fundamental AI research Contributing factors: - small models improve/become significantly more impactful - open weights community broadens its reach - gpus continue to get faster & cheaper - meaningful post-training/RL experiments become more and more tractable - raw capabilities of large models plateau (100% acc is actually a wall) => "foundation models" become commodity => product matters more there will obviously be incredibly important problems at the frontier of a gazillion parameters, of models launching 100k agents, and training incredibly complex systems with one million gpus. But there will be so many more and incredibly important problems at the hands of a community that is free to ask any questions they like, and benefits directly from sharing with everyone else.
