Spain, which never misses an opportunity to lecture Israel, has declared a state of emergency in Ceuta following the crisis over its immigration policy. Maybe before it continues lecturing us, it’s time it explained to the world why it still maintains colonial enclaves in Africa.

The New York Times has spoken with several Moroccan nationals who say they were encouraged to cross into Ceuta by the Moroccan authorities.

Yesterday in Ceuta there were widespread reports, and many comments on my posts, claiming that everyone crossing the border had been sent back. What did I actually witness? I saw a large number of men, roughly aged 18–30, being escorted back towards Morocco by the authorities. In some cases, force was used. It did appear to me that the vast majority have left with mainly stragglers left hiding but I only arrived at 5pm approximately yesterday so it’s not a full picture I also saw local residents standing guard outside their homes and neighbourhoods. Some were carrying spanners, baseball bats and metal poles, warning groups of men to move on and leave the area. I’ll be spending the full day in Ceuta today to see how the situation develops and will report only what I witness. Apologies for the delays in posting yesterday. Mobile signal at the border was extremely poor, with multiple live TV broadcasts putting heavy demand on the network. Almost everyone who entered Ceuta yesterday has now returned to Morocco. It is not possible to travel from Ceuta or Melilla to mainland Spain without presenting identification at a police checkpoint. The integrity of the Schengen area is fully guaranteed.
