@cycloben2 At the GC front, stage 5 is weird. And overall I felt so bad for Giulio. He deserves more from his team. I still can’t understand why the super GC team kept the time that long. Arrieta and Eulalio made up for the weirdness of the GC inaction. fine it was raining heavy. Still..

It’s hard, almost impossible to write about the race itself. I feel 2026 Giro d’Italia has clearly been directed by Giuseppe Tornatore so far, because we haven’t seen this much emotion, intrigue, scheming, and drama in the first five days of a Grand Tour in a very long time. Today’s events alone could have filled two full-length feature films. What we witnessed today was life itself. Two 23-24-year-old guys, genuinely talented, with the future ahead of them, clashed in an incredibly fair duel under conditions that felt like they were riding almost naked and unarmed on the Scottish Highlands in some 12th-century knightly battle. The bike itself was almost worthless in those circumstances. And they made mistakes - plenty of them. But that’s part of it. Who hasn’t made mistakes at that age? I’ve been drunk once in my life too… and I regretted it. They fought to the very end, perhaps even beyond their limits, and the key is that it was honest racing, driven by their hearts in those final meters. Overall, it was an absolutely fantastic spectacle with a sort of win-win situation that probably made both of them happy How fantastic the peloton’s performance was… well, that’s a matter of perspective. I feel a very strong heartbreak theme running through the whole day - not because something personally breaks one’s heart, but because teams failed to properly distribute resources for the greater good. I don’t think it was ever in Lidl-Trek’s script for Giulio Ciccone to wear the pink jersey at any point in this race... but based on how today was handled by them, I’m almost certain the team was set up very wrong for the race. And this bad setup might not only hurt Giulio Ciccone, but could also affect Derek Gee-West in the third week. Going back to Giulio… I feel truly sorry for him. Today should have been a celebration, and indirectly, the team completely ruined it. This also undermines the narrative that Lidl-Trek is a superteam. They are not at all. Any other top-8 team would have handled this situation in their own way. There was no chance of doing so here. We already saw something similar yesterday with Ben Turner, there were layers there that might make sense in hindsight and justify INEOS’s plans, but this particular one is indefensible. After today's nightmare, only 2+1 stage victories can save this Giro for Lidl-Trek. Nothing else. #GirodItalia
