Reminder, folks…America has always had guns. However, we have NOT always had school shootings. We've had hundreds of years of schools AND guns with NO school shootings.
Let's quit pretending it's a gun problem and start addressing the fact that we coddle mentally ill people in our society and put innocent people at risk as a result. The man who killed the girl in Charlotte didn't use a gun. But he share’s the same profile as a school shooter: mentally ill.
We have an entire system that's been conditioned to pretend these folks can live in a free society with others. The state, the justice system, social services, counselors, and more fail us by letting them walk free and harm people. There's always signs and evidences these people are incapable of functioning in normal life. Our nation’s untethered (from reality) empathy is what lets these people do the damage they do.
It's time to stop making this an endless debate about guns. Nobody’s going to confiscate guns. No law-abiding citizen is going to give up their guns, especially since we feel unprotected from these people already. It's time for real criminal justice reform and state mental institutions.
Just know this…I will teach my daughters how to look for dangers around them and not make themselves vulnerable to attack. They won't ride public transportation in our cities the way things currently are. They will not sit unguarded where they can’t observe their surroundings. But if what happened in Charlotte happened to one of my girls, I wouldn't sleep until the whole system that failed my girl was changed. That's what ought to happen anyway.
