African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA)
As #Africa navigates growing complexities in the fight against #malaria, the Big Push, under the oversight of @endmalaria & aligned with the @_AfricanUnion Union Catalytic Framework to End AIDS, TB, and Eliminate Malaria by 2030, advances a coordinated, country-led response. To support implementation of its 6 pillars, @ALMA_2030 is helping countries establish a Big Push Accountability and Monitoring Framework. Through scorecard tools & structured tracking, the framework strengthens accountability and translates political commitments into measurable results. Last week, Zambia 🇿🇲became the first country to adopt the framework. Full story ➡️ bit.ly/4rMH1tk

African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA)@ALMA_2030

The #AUMalariaProgressReport2025 highlights critical funding gaps as one of the key barriers to achieving #malaria elimination targets, as envisioned in the @_AfricanUnion Catalytic Framework to End AIDS, TB, and Eliminate Malaria by 2030. This raises an urgent question - where will the money come from to close these gaps and meet the massive resource needs required to get the malaria fight back on track, or, as @JoyPhumaphi_ , Executive Secretary of @ALMA_2030 puts it, “to get the vehicle to the destination of a malaria-free world?" In her sit-down with @BBCWorld, she explores this issue in depth. What is clear, however, is that #Africa must lead this fight, and that ending malaria is a whole-of-society challenge. Catholic Bishops in Algeria have expressed great joy and anticipation over the upcoming Apostolic Visit of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for April 13 to 15, his first journey to Africa as Pontiff. In a statement issued following the Wednesday, February 25 announcement of the 11-day pastoral visit of the Holy Father to four African nations, Catholic Bishops in Algeria also call on the people of God to pray for the success of the visit. The Holy Father’s 11-day Apostolic journey will take him to four African countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. According to Vatican officials, Pope Leo XIV is to visit Algiers and Annaba in Algeria from April 13 to 15; Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Douala in Cameroon from April 15 to 18; Luanda, Muxima, and Saurimo in Angola from April 18 to 21; and Malabo, Mongomo, and Bata in Equatorial Guinea from April 21 to 23. “Our joy is great. He comes to meet the Algerian people and their leaders. He comes to encourage our Church in its mission of fraternal presence amid a predominantly Muslim population,” the Catholic Church leaders say. They add, “He comes to remind us of the blessing of having a great common brother, native to this land, in the person of Saint Augustine, whose figure can accompany our shared journey.” “He comes as an apostle of peace, and the greeting Es-Salam Aleykum that presides over his visit is both the greeting that all of Algeria offers him and the one he addresses to us, as Jesus, risen, addressed his apostles,” the Local Ordinaries of Alger, Constantine, Laghouat, and Oran Dioceses say. They continue, “Indeed, it is the greeting sent to us by the Lord so that, beyond any friction or disturbance within us—whether from the past or present, from tumultuous relationships or misunderstandings—we may first be guided by the sincere desire to live together in peace, the only way to glorify God.” They invite the people of God to pray “so that this visit may bear abundant fruit in the hearts of each of us and among all of us.” “We must prepare for this visit, both in our hearts and in our places, and in our interactions with our friends. When the Apostle Peter went to Jerusalem, Joppa, or Antioch, the communities were touched because the Lord accompanied his steps,” Catholic Bishops in Algeria say. They implore, “May the visit of the Successor of Peter touch the hearts of those who know how to welcome him.” A prayer for the visit, included with the bishops’ message, calls on God to bless the Pope’s journey, guide his mission of love, and strengthen the Church in Algeria. aciafrica.org/news/20385/our…

Stephen Cardinal Brislin has cautioned against the temptation to fall into despair when faced with modern challenges, urging the people of God in South Africa to place their hope in God at all times. In his homily at Cathedral of Christ the King, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg said that a Christian’s journey is not easy and requires perseverance, prayer, and moral courage. “The Christian life is not an easy life. We never give in to despair. We never give up on others. We don't give up on ourselves because our hope is in God. Our hope is in Jesus Christ,” Cardinal Brislin said. He added, “If we place our hope in ourselves, we are doomed. But it is through Jesus Christ that we are saved. No matter how weak or how frail we may be. At times we become a little bit disgusted with ourselves that we continue to give in to weakness.” The Cardinal cautioned against giving in to the desire “to worship false gods, to worship wealth and money and materialism, to worship technology or whatever things that lure us away from God,” adding, “Those are the false gods that we have to be careful about. And we can stand up to them.” Cardinal Brislin said that temptations, as well as the decline in ethics and morality make a Christian’s life “not easy”. “We must look at ourselves to see what is wrong in our country,” he said, condemning excessive freedom that he said had led to a reckless lifestyle. He pointed to everyday examples of disregard for rules and responsibility, stressing that Christians are called to live virtuous, ethical lives in both small and significant matters. “There's a sense of normalness witnessing even such simple things as people not stopping at traffic lights, wandering across the road. Those are simple things. As followers of Jesus Christ, we have to be vigilant that we are living an ethical, a moral, and a virtuous life to the best of our ability. It is important that we make the effort by ourselves,” he said. Cardinal Brislin called for vigilance at all times, those under his pastoral care to embrace prayer. He addressed in particular those preparing to receive Church Sacraments during Easter, saying, “ “We pray for you Catechumens and the candidates who are preparing particularly for this Easter, that you will be faithful to what you are doing that it's not just about passing through the rituals of Baptism and Confirmation, receiving Holy Communion.” aciafrica.org/news/20375/chr…

Despite mounting challenges in the fight against #malaria, Africa is deploying the most advanced toolkit in history. In 2025, most nets distributed were dual active ingredient nets - 45% more effective than standard nets. Furthermore, 24 Member States have rolled out @WHO-approved vaccines, with nearly 30M doses delivered in 2025, almost triple the previous year. Countries like Tanzania are investing in research through institutions like @ifakarahealth to drive home-grown solutions. Africa’s long-term security lies in health sovereignty and strong African leadership. #AUMalariaProgressReport2025
