@rwlesq If the prequel trilogy didn't have a Star Wars level budget and a cast of some of the biggest up and coming stars, it would have been unwatchable.

Since everyone is doing their "The Last Jedi" take - I didn't like it. I was thrown off in the opening scene when Poe basically prank-calls General Hux, and it was basically downhill from there, leading up to the AT-M6s shooting at Luke, which was staged like something out of a Wes Anderson movie. Maybe there was a good movie in there, but it wasn't a good Star Wars movie, and it was made worse by the fact that it really didn't fit with the final movie (not strictly Rian Johnson's fault, but still). Of course, the last movie was worse. Some of the critiques of it were dubious, but that didn't make it a good movie.

@xenocryptsite My prediction is it will be better than Oppenheimer, but people will take out their (very justified) frustrations with Oppenheimer on it.

@TNOQuoProQuid The interesting thing about Serial is how it is basically 100% to opposite of the true crime boom that followed. Koenig spent a lot of time and effort defending a (probably) guilty and definitely scummy man.

it's interesting to go back and look at serial season one in the context of all that followed bc i think it's clear no one on the project anticipated that random listeners would take it upon themselves to become amateur sleuths, derive so much voyeuristic pleasure from the it

@xenocryptsite Its always funny to me that two of the most normy sitcoms were Seinfeld and The Big Bang Theory. About a stand up comic and phd educated scientists, respectively.

Various TV shows, comedians, etc, also have this problem as I've said. "This is a show about what it was like to be a struggling fireman in Nebraska. Unfortunately, I have used up all my anecdotes from back then and now I am a showrunner, in Los Angeles."

I feel like the CW for a long time was "don't wait too long to do a sequel, people will have lost interest" and I think it somehow became "wait long enough so the sequel is an event". What changed?

A pet peeve I have with mnemonic devices is when the rhyme is detached from the message, if that makes sense. Like this could easily be misremembered as "red on yellow, safe fellow, red on black kills jack" A good example is the "red sky in morning, sailors take warning" one
Alex G@AlexG1131063

My kid just showed me a poem in which he'd referred to the ocean as 'a world-broad span of spumed and risen brine.' He's only six so I obviously let him down as gently as I could -- told him it was charming enough on first exposure but ultimately paltry and derivative.

@MattZeitlin Unironically I dont think that in 1976 I don't think the average gentile had any kind of emotional connection to the holocaust. They knew the Nazis were bad, but they were cartoonish movie villains

speaks to how beloved david bowie was and just how much cocaine he was using at the time that everyone just let him slide on the "i was using so much cocaine i became a nazi for a few years" thing
1976 Live@50YearsAgoLive

After a trip to Moscow, rock star David Bowie is briefly detained by customs officers at the Poland-Russia border over a collection of Nazi books and mementos with which he travels. He explains that it is for research on a film about Joseph Goebbels and he is released after a few hours.

@xenocryptsite Ghostbusters? Nostalgia bait. Peanuts? Never gone away. Jurassic World? Nostalgia bait. James Bond? Never gone away. Despite never really having gone away, new Star Wars stuff is usually nostalgia bait.

I don’t mean to split hairs but it was definitely Sekiro rather than Souls. Even Bloodborne more than Souls. Most people don’t parry the world in a Souls game. It’s a fairly niche mechanic for the general audience.
Kieron 🌿@WYLDERSSWORD

the parry is 100% the defining mechanic of the last decade souls games popularised the parry, now even doom & spider-man have a parry, expedition 33's loop is built on parries, any game with swords is expected to have it. and it still feels satisfying to pull off in every game

The Batman (2022) is a movie centering on a fictionalized version of a 60s serial killer (zodiac), with a hero whose backstory draws heavily from a 60s dynasty (the kennedys), against a backdrop of 60s organized crime (sicilian mafia) also people have cell phones. AOC is there.

#Michael is aiming to set the record for biggest music biopic opening weekend with a $70 million-plus debut. Some exhibitors are predicting the final number will be closer to $80 million, far above 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” ($51 million) and 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton” ($60 million, the current record holder). “Michael” is expected to be even bigger internationally. It’s projected to earn $75 million to $80 million from 82 markets. Globally, the film should end up with a stellar $140 million to $150 million (or more) by Sunday. variety.com/2026/film/box-…

It's a funny question. I've wondered it before. EG, assuming infinite prep all around, the set of people who could do a competent walk-on role on a procedural is presumably a lot larger than the set of people who could be competitive NBA players or something.
sebastian castillo@bartlebytaco

possibly a trite and obvious point, but i think what it reveals is how many people out there, if given the right conditions, could be excellent actors, musicians, whatever. talent is a common quality

Bit of a false memory here. A lot of people say the MCU was doomed because people tuned out right after "Endgame" but they had three of the ten biggest movies of 2022, three years after Tony Stark died.

Joseph Kahn@JosephKahn

Marvel ended for me as soon as Tony Stark exited, and frankly from most people judging by the collapse of box office afterwards. Killing beloved characters will always feel more like salacious corporate mandates than real story beats. The execs may not believe in Iron Man, Han Solo, James Bond, but we do.
