Publication day for my first book, Reading Hegel: Irony, Recollection, Critique ! It's written I hope in a lively,at times polemical style––not only for Hegel scholars but for anyone interested in what's at stake in our reading of philosophy, theory, and criticism @UChicagoPress

@14JUN1995 I don't think Osborne finds this convincing though. For him by the time of TBM and her turn to Kierkegaard, Rose is only really occupied with individual "ethical" action. 3/3

@14JUN1995 Her reading of the "leap of faith" to theorise not an imaginary leap outside of or against historical necessity (a kind of Zizekian abyssal act) but the risk of political action within compromised historical conditions./2

Howard Caygill on Gillian Rose's late unfinished Paradiso: "There is no hope to abandon nor need for hope to be gained since Paradiso remembers that hope is the last and worst evil to be released from Pandora's Box. This is an emancipated despair or liberation from hope..."

Interesting to read Gillian Rose (HCS) after reading Lukacs. Whereas Lukacs is quick to condemn the supposed bourgeois elements of Hegel’s thought, Rose is more defensive of Hegel, seeing him as more allied with Marx than even Marx thought. Many paragraphs similar to this one

This must be what Lacan was talking about: “It was a small can, and even, let’s specify, a sardine can... It was looking at me at the light point, where everything that looks at me is, and that is not a metaphor.” (Seminar XI)

"As Rose puts it, 'The very struggle to keep one's autonomy separate from one's heteronomy robs 'morality' of the knowledge and of the politics which might reorient this predicament.' It denies the subject the very terrain upon which freedom might be realized." /2

My essay "The risk of action" against ideas of "abyssal" freedom: "To imagine freedom as a freedom from historical constraints is not only misleading, but disempowering. It veils the conditions and contradictions through which genuine action and transformation might occur..." /1
