NEW: @ICEgov is urging California leaders not to release a suspect accused in a deadly stabbing — as the case reignites the clash over sanctuary policies. Federal officials say Wilfredo Jose Tortolero-Arriechi, a Venezuelan national in the country illegally, is charged in the December killing of 51-year-old Alberto Rangel inside a San Francisco hospital. ICE lodged a detainer after the attack — but is now calling on Governor Gavin Newsom and state officials to ensure he’s not released from custody. According to DHS, the suspect had previously been encountered by Border Patrol in 2023 and released into the U.S. Officials say in the weeks leading up to the attack, he allegedly threatened hospital staff before the fatal stabbing. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis saying, “If it weren’t for the Biden administration’s reckless open-border policies, Alberto Rangel would still be alive.
