After writing a nuanced piece on a new UN-linked study suggesting that some climate models are now pointing to warming scenarios that may be less extreme than initially projected, La Presse, a paper I contributed to for free for 25 years, chose to attack me today instead of engaging with the substance of the argument (links below). I was quickly portrayed as a climate skeptic, which is simply false. I have repeatedly stated, publicly and clearly, that climate change remains one of the greatest threats to global food systems. La Presse's Philippe Mercure never contacted me for comment or clarification before going on the offensive and attaching labels that do not reflect my views. That is deeply disappointing. What concerns me most is the growing tendency among some media voices to frame every discussion around climate through fear and polarization. Mercure, Francis Vailles, and others seem far more interested in dividing people and reinforcing narratives than encouraging thoughtful debate around how environmental policies impact farmers, processors, and food affordability. The reality is this: there is not a single person I know in the food industry who does not care about the environment, from farmgate to store and restaurant. Not one. Farmers and food processors live with environmental realities every day. But supporting sustainability also means following evolving science, adapting policies when evidence changes, and finding pragmatic ways to reduce emissions without undermining food production or the competitiveness of our agri-food sector. Science evolves. It always has. We should be mature enough as a society to discuss new findings openly instead of trying to discredit anyone who raises legitimate questions about policy direction or economic consequences.

Bill C-22 empowers the government to order VPN providers in Canada to retain metadata for up to a year. The EU's highest court has struck down this type of mass data retention legislation twice already, suggesting it won't stand up to scrutiny: 1. eff.org/node/81899 2. ccdcoe.org/incyder-articl… We're going to reiterate this one more time: there is no universe in which Proton VPN compromises its no-logs policy.
David Peterson@davidgpeterson

Regarding Canada's Bill C-22: @ProtonVPN is Swiss. Complying with foreign surveillance orders without Swiss legal process is a criminal offence. Not happening. We'll defend our Canadian users and never compromise them. We will fight C-22's application by every means available.

🚨 Big Tech just told Trudeau & Carney’s Liberals to pound sand!! Apple flat-out said:
“We will NOT build a backdoor into our products. Ever.” Meta, VPN companies, and even American Republicans in Congress are warning Canada: Bill C-22 (the sneaky “Lawful Access Act”) is a full-on privacy killer. They want forced “technical capabilities” — code for backdoors into your encrypted data. ⛔️ Banking records. ⛔️ Health files. ⛔️ Private messages. Everything. ❌ This isn’t “public safety.”
✅ This is a totalitarian power grab dressed up in nice words. Apple, Meta, and cybersecurity experts see it for what it is:
A backdoor for the government today = a backdoor for hackers and hostile states tomorrow. Liberals keep saying “if you’ve done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide.” Meanwhile every major tech company is screaming: NO ❌ This is what happens when a government thinks it owns your life. Drop a 🔥 if you’re done with the surveillance state. #cdnpoli #BillC22 #LiberalSurveillance #PrivacyTheft #CarneyAuthoritarian #CanadaFirst

While U.K.'s PM Starmer is facing growing pressure to resign amid a sluggish U.K. economy, PM Carney’s popularity is at a record high — despite Canada arguably being in worse shape on several key metrics, including unemployment, productivity, private-sector growth, and food inflation. Wonder why...

Interesting how Canadian media largely ignored this new climate scenarios paper published by mainstream climate scientists (Link below). The study doesn’t deny climate change, but it does acknowledge that some of the extreme warming pathways heavily used for years are now viewed as less plausible. That matters enormously for energy policy, agriculture, food security, infrastructure, and affordability debates. Instead of discussing how climate modelling assumptions are evolving, we continue to get simplistic “net zero at all costs” narratives. Science is supposed to evolve. Public debate should too.

"La Presse ended my 25-year column, which I wrote for free, for saying out loud what many Canadians are thinking quietly. Subsidies given to private media are a partisan issue, fostering more editorial bias. And now, Ottawa wants to give the media another $6 billion. I’m not surprised."
