@MadsDavies 1. Say it as it is. Otherwise the challenges will come out later in the process and people will withdraw. 2. Good pictures can say a lot, and so can real quotes from the congregation. 3. Be clear what is essential and what might be helpful in the new person.

Help! I'm writing something on adverts for clergy jobs. Looking for views on - What makes a good ad/parish profile - What makes a bad ad/parish profile - For PCC members and others, was it difficult to draw such things up? Did you need more help? Image: CT Ads Team circa 1964

@MadsDavies I wouldn’t agree with that - my Diocese has one of the largest growth in children for 2025. Most children don’t start with Sunday - we’re using messy church, muddy, bubble, etc. And using our relationship with CofE schools more effectively. It can happen, but rarely by accident.

Was reading that the median C of E has a weekly average attendance of children of 1 (down from 3 in 2019). Around a third have no children in their worshiping community. My sense is that the concentration of the remaining children in larger churches will continue.

@WalkerMarcus And listing will add to the time, money and expertise required to look after a currently unlisted church building making it more likely they will end up not used for Christian worship

Is the intention good? Broadly yes. Will the proposed plan work? Not without a lot of other things added to give it meat (and by other things, I mostly mean ‘money’).

Listing doesn’t stop a church closing or being sold. Ensuring churches have enough money to repair the buildings, enough people to raise the money (and, one might add, worship in those buildings), and aren’t drowned in paperwork when trying to repair them might.

Reform will protect British culture, because a nation without a culture is just an economic zone.  We will preserve Britain’s Christian heritage, granting listed status to all churches to prohibit their conversion into places of worship for any other faith.

@OSacrumCorIesu I think we probably do know the factors - but some of the answers don’t make easy reading. You do need to look at all the numbers together, e.g. some of our numbers last year indicated growth was coming from existing people attending a bit more often.

But the 48% is stark. Perhaps we’re still recovering from Covid, and will increase with time. Perhaps we’re stagnant. But if we cd understand better the factors at play (long vacancies? cultural atrophy? over-heavy governance? weak theological formation?), I’d like to see it.

I’m still pondering the qns raised by the Springtime conference. But this C of E slide from Ken Eames is sobering. Is there learning or commonalities from the 12% of C of E churches experiencing growth against all 3 metrics? Are they geographically dispersed?

Great @ChurchTimes conference hosted by @MadsDavies with fascinating speakers all of whom had insightful experience what they had seen locally, and how they had responded. Lots of food for thought for @CofEPortsmouth
Fr Angela Rayner SMMS@OSacrumCorIesu

Controversial(?) list from David Goodhew at @ChurchTimes “Springtime for the C of E: where are we seeing growth?” conference. “Is it springtime in the C of E? Yes, in quite a few places; others not so much. But churches can still grow in the chill winds of secular Britain.”

@MadsDavies It is a lot of work - I’m working on a bid. But having good missional design, project plan, budget, outcomes, etc, that everyone shares multiplies the chances of success, and means you can celebrate when it happens. I would say looking at ways to grow the Kingdom is core work.

Applying for SMMIB: "Detailed information & analysis had to be presented in relation to every single intervention. The amount of work this involved was enormous, drawing large amounts of capacity away from business as usual, to the detriment of other significant areas of work"

@MadsDavies I’m worried that I’m responsible for a large chunk of that increase! Hopefully no one has access to my MyWaitrose card data to say how many I’ve eaten over a year.

Really looking forward to chairing this later this month. We’ll have a mix of hearing from statisticians & parish clergy talking about what’s happening on the ground. Do join us! churchtimes.co.uk/springtime-for…

@MadsDavies @MadsDavies I could give you other similar examples - but if the Statements of Need and Significance are robust and take account of policies then the DAC and others are much more likely to give a quick and positive recommendation - and the Parish can move forward how they wish

I’d be curious to know what the decision would have been had they applied for the faculty originally. A Times investigation found that permission had been granted in nine out of ten cases for parishes to install new fossil-fuelled boilers thetimes.com/uk/environment…
Marcus Walker@WalkerMarcus

Forcing a freezing parish to rip out its new boilers (costing over £18,000) and then spend £60,000 on heat pumps so perfectly epitomises the contempt in which the national church holds the local church. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/01/0…

@john_cope Quite right John - was in the DfE when skills went to the Department for Innovation universities and skills. It didn’t work at all and made 14-19 routes more complex

DWP civil servants especially have coveted this for years. The risk is it downgrades FE/apprenticeships to 'get people off welfare', while bringing back the old fashioned snobbery that higher education is the route for "successful people" feweek.co.uk/skills-brief-t…

@MadsDavies @thevicarswife @WalkerMarcus As a “SMMIB-funded” person, we’re already achieving rapid progress in @CofEPortsmouth helping Parishes accelerate their mission plans. Come and see what we’re doing - across all traditions, in all corners of the Diocese

@thevicarswife @WalkerMarcus I have no insight into this case but in some cases, I think these posts are created to, in Chichester strategy's words "satisfy the needs of the national church". The SMMIB-funded programmes generally entail diocesan-level management

@matthew_barber That’s a really good summary I concur with Matthew - a big unitary delivering statutory services (mostly specified by government / legislation anyway) and Parishes doing the non-statutory things that add local value. It’s the way to go in most places.

In Oxford this afternoon talking to Oxford City council about their plans for a "Greater Oxford". I've been very clear on my views on local government reform in Oxfordshire (matthewbarber.co.uk/news/theres-on…) but an important discussion nevertheless about how councils can work closely with the police to reduce crime and make our community safer. #devolution

@DrAlexFord Looks like wall barley. It’s really quick growing so can spring up within weeks, even if it’s been sprayed off. It’s not resistant but it’s certainly persistent!

I think our local authority in Portsmouth uses glyphosate to spray weeds around public footpaths. Whenever they spray these wheat plants appear resistant and spring up. Anybody studying glyphosate resistant genes? #roundup #herbicides #GMcrops

Labour government: Build, baby, build. Labour council: it’s a bit difficult, we can only manage 52% of the allocation (and eight of the sites allocated already have planning permission). It’s not even an attempt at making a compliant local plan - and gives no hope to young people.

One of my favourite services of the year. Great to see the cathedral packed with clergy, church officers and friends from across the diocese.
Portsmouth Diocese@CofEPortsmouth

Our annual #ChrismEucharist took place @PortsmouthCath this morning. Clergy and lay ministers gathered to renew their commitment to ministry, and to receive oils blessed by @JonathanHFrost for use in parishes. They also shared a lunch of bread and soup together. #MaundyThursday
