Manic Spreadsheeter. Likes old anime dubs, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and that weird sticky goo that holds magazine inserts in place. Sky: @v-i.dev

@OhPoorPup Japan seemed to love the format. It's to the point that anything with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio is often listed as ビスタサイズ (Vista Size), even if it's not actually VistaVision

today I learned: the end of evangelion was the last film (until this year) to be shot on Vistavision film, the format used for White Christmas, The Searchers, The Ten Commandments, a lot of high "spectacle" hollywood classics

@AniSenior That’s in a clear “Scanavo-style” case, as far as I can tell. Might be the first US-market anime in one of those, so it is historically significant, but that question was specifically about “standard” BD cases that were funky colors.

Were the Nozomi releases of Gundam F91, Char's Counterattack, and December Sky the only US-market anime releases in "regular" BD cases not colored blue or clear? (Not counting Digipaks, DVD cases, UHD cases, etc)

@AniSenior A few months ago I imported a German Battle Angel Alita DVD because it was supposed to have the old MangaUK dub on it. Turns out it was a bootleg rip of the ADV DVD with German audio grafted on, and Manga Germany hadn’t existed since the VHS days

@_v__i_ Most German bootlegs currently floating around, at least anime-wise, are using dubs that are at least 22 years old and, in most cases, never had a legit DVD (TV-airings, VHS, LD), and are hard or impossible to licence - so there is no company that could sue the bootleggers.

Got a new copy of “Royal Space Force: The Wing A of Honneamiae” in, this time from Proware Media in Taiwan. Never knew it was based on a Rumiko Takahashi manga. You learn something new every day. /s (And yes, this is an official release)

Looks like @ShopCrunchyroll finally has being able to order backordered items as a feature. The holidays are going to be dangerous this year.

@AniSenior Yeah, anything Southeast Asia is a nightmare trying to get any info on. There’a a reason AnimeNewsNetwork doesn’t track VCD releases, and it’s because nobody could be sure what was legit or not.

@_v__i_ Some lines above it seems to be the actual copyright text? Region lock to R3 and no other subs than Chinese is also a good sign, as well as the at least reasonable price and the "only for Taiwan" text. The DVD was also released after Taiwan got some copyright laws - so likely ok

@AniSenior Well, as close to officially licensed as I can tell. They’re a legit company, and following their “licensed by” credit on ANN down a rabbit hole of archived sites shows they did a theatrical run at some point in the 2000s. prowaremedia.com.tw

@_v__i_ How can one verify that this was official / licensed? Especially after what I've learned regarding Taiwan Soundtrack CDs

@MichaelToole Arguably being the single most popular anime in the west for a while likely didn’t hurt. For reference, (as far as I’m aware) there are only 2 anime with more than 100 VHS releases in the US: Ranma ½ and Dragon Ball Z. Viz as we know them today would not exist without Ranma.

@MichaelToole If I’m remembering my history right, Ranma was the very first (successful) attempt to dub an entire TV anime without a broadcast deal, and it ended up taking them 9 years. No wonder they were charging $15 an episode!

Future Boy Conan Episode 1 on the 2011 JPBD has a subtitle track of the complete storyboards for the episode I don't think I've ever seen this done on Blu-Ray in general before, a very interesting use of PGS

@NickNickGoose @JTaylorPro They’ve mentioned before of the issue when something wasn’t selling, they decide that “this will be the last print run”, expecting to last a year or two, and then it sells out overnight because they said the magic words “out of print”

@NickNickGoose @JTaylorPro I think it’s down to them deciding a print run will be the last, and letting people know then that it’s “OOP”, versus the norm of deciding when stock is almost out to not do another print run, and declaring it “OOP” when it’s pretty much already sold out.

LRT: Interesting to see another anime distributor do numbered copies (even if this isn’t actually anime). Gotta say, the gold is pretty neat, and it’s probably my 2nd favorite number indicator after the hand-written number of Bandai’s Saber Marionette J box.
