Kemi Badenoch absolutely smashed #PMQs today. 🔥 “Yet again, he’s taking money from those who do work, to give to those who don’t. First we had the budget for Benefits Street, now it’s the bailout for Benefits Street” “They’re now just the Welfare Party”

Last year it was the Budget for Benefits Street. Now it’s the Bailout for Benefits Street. Labour are taxing working people to hand out more welfare. Only the @Conservatives have a plan to bring down energy bills for everyone.

This is a huge cover up, there is no way in the world that the CoS to the PM would have his phone stolen (presumably with an ability to track location) and is treated in this way. Security & Intel Cttee needs to get involved and bring everyone involved as a witness. Where is the Cabinet Secretariat? This is a massive breach of NatSec. and somehow nonchalantly the Police do nothing! 👇🏽
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

The police response to Morgan McSweeney having his phone stolen in October last year seems bizarre As phones go his was about as sensitive as it gets. The number of every cabinet minister and the prime minister. Messages with all of them. Emails, text messages. You name it If you were a hostile state looking for an insight into what was going on in government at that time/ kompromat it's probably about as good as it gets And yet they treated him in the same way as tens of thousands of people are treated every year when their phones are stolen They gave him a crime reference number. Officers didn't speak to him. They didn't conduct an investigation. They just closed the case Now that's not to say they could have tracked down the thief - he was on an e-bike and wearing a balaclava for one. It's just the lack of any further investigation seems odd, although I'm sure it will be familiar to many of the 70,000+ people who reported their mobiles stolen last year More on our podcast The State of It pod.fo/e/3bdacf

The Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea could be up and running in just a few months. Enough gas to heat 1.6 million homes. Every single drop will go into our pipes. Ed Miliband is blocking it. Madness.

Just remember folks, when you are shivering, or losing your job, or unable to put petrol in your car... Starmer chose NOT to defend the Strait of Hormuz. This is not 'joining the war'; it's the normal practice of *keeping shipping lanes open*. This is on him. Don't let him off the hook. #Starmergeddon

Max Dowman was crap by the way. Mykolenko pocketed him at every opportunity. Then Pickford missed a cross, and he scored a goal with no keeper and he’s now the new coming of Messi. Honestly.

If 🥀 socialist Labour want to reduce prices at the pumps, they’d cut fuel duty or the many other taxes already on fuel. (That’s even before all the other ways they fleece motorists).

Hearing a lot of "14 years of Tory failure" chants lately, but let's break it down. Governing isn't a walk in the park. The Conservatives inherited a mess and navigated crisis after crisis. Here's a quick list of major challenges they faced (with years), showing it wasn't all smooth sailing or self-inflicted. Credit where due for steering through: - Inherited an "empty wallet" (2010): Took over from Labour with a note literally saying "there's no money left." Massive deficit post-2008 financial crash forced tough choices. - Coalition government (2010-2015): Had to partner with Lib Dems after no majority win, leading to compromises on policies like tuition fees and welfare reforms. - Austerity measures (2010-2019): Implemented to balance the books amid global recession fallout. Cut spending, raised taxes, but helped stabilize economy long-term despite public backlash. - Brexit referendum and negotiations (2016-2020): Triggered by 2016 vote, years of complex talks with EU, internal party divisions, and multiple PM changes to get a deal done. - Post-Brexit trade and economic agreements (2020 onwards): Negotiated new deals with countries like Australia, Japan, and CPTPP bloc to replace EU ties. Ongoing work amid supply chain disruptions. - COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022): Global health crisis with lockdowns, furlough scheme saving millions of jobs, vaccine rollout success, but huge economic hit and tough decisions on restrictions. - Illegal migrant boat crossings during lockdowns (2020-2022): Surge in Channel crossings exploited lockdown chaos, straining borders and resources while enforcing COVID rules. Over 45,000 arrivals in 2022 alone. - Obsession with Partygate (2021-2022): Media frenzy over No. 10 gatherings during lockdowns. Yes, mistakes made, but overshadowed real governance like Ukraine support and energy crisis response. Add in ISIS terror threats (2014-2017), the 2022 Ukraine war sparking inflation/energy spikes, and Liz Truss's mini-budget fallout (2022). No government's perfect, but context matters. #UKPolitics

My plan in 2022 was to lower the cost of domestic energy in Britain (relative to the international market) by: - abolishing windfall tax on North Sea - licensing new North Sea production - allowing fracking - abolishing green taxes and subsidies This would have lowered Britain's domestic energy costs relative to the international market. At the same time we would guarantee that energy bills would not go above £2,500 - recognising the prior state failure in ensuring security of energy and the necessity of energy for the economy. Because this only paid out when energy prices were high- its cost would be quickly reduced/eliminated by falling domestic energy prices thanks to supply side policy. Needless to say the Treasury was unable/unwilling to model this and the policy was missrepresented by the media who simply don't understand this stuff. My successors continued with the price guarantee but failed to implement the supply side measures. Thus we are back to square one. It's still the right policy.
