There are a lot of people arguing that the evidence is too weak to go along with Jon Haidt in the movement to get smartphones away from kids. But what are the arguments that kids should have smartphones? Do they help them pay attention in school? What benefits do they bring over an analogue life? There's the argument that kids can't socialize without them these days. But if there's community buy-in, and all kids in one school can't use them during school, for example, how is that still a factor?

@SusanDReynolds @cheesemonkeysf In OUSD, we make our advance students take a 5 week compression Algebra course during summer(5 hours a day) if they want to be in Geometry in grade 9. When their entire math 8 time should have been spent in Algebra🤦‍♀️

@aretae @tetheredtoed1 @garrytan Seeing a pattern in a ratio table and understanding the constant of proportionality relies on students knowing their multiplication facts.

@garrytan 10k hours tutoring + teaching math. ~All failure is not having 2 steps before automatic. Near 100% of fraction failure is because multiplication is too slow. MOST algebra failure is fraction failure. Most of math comprehension sits on multiplication tables.

Teach children their multiplication tables please

As of Feb 1, 2026, adults 18–64 must work or volunteer 80 hours/month to qualify for SNAP. Parents lose exemptions when their youngest turns 14. Miss the hours for 3 months? You’re out. Nationwide rule.

@Brian_Sauve I have not had any children by choice. This has allowed me to spend a lot of time with my niece and nephews. Taking them on trips, being their sounding board, having weekly meals at my sisters’ homes. I think I will fine in my old age.

It is desperately sad to think of all the intentionally barren women who will find themselves totally alone in their 50s, realizing their irreversible mistake. They will wish they could trade it all—money, vacations, independence, all of it—for children they can now never have.

American was trying to help her daughter with her math homework. The way math is done now is so complicated she had to ask the teacher to help understand She breaks it down I had to watch this multiple times and it’s just a basic math problem. This is ridiculous

@JamesAFurey I keep saying “ why can’t we put them in the Zoom Room”. I don’t have a problem going live so they can still get the lesson.

We can debate policy all day, but this is the reality teachers live in: Every school has students who can’t go a single hour without derailing instruction, and they’re shielded from consequences at every turn. It’s unjust to those who came to learn. Everyone knows it, but if you say it out loud, you’re the problem.
