@AdrianoAguzzi The experiment lacks required controls. The approach is therefore weak. (Can you tell I am in grant-review mode?)

@AdrianoAguzzi @AdrianoAguzzi Let’s not conflate academic seminars which are grounded in fact, with political debates that are unencumbered by the truth. Such comparisons will cause exactly the behavior you are complaining about—the audience fact-checking the speaker on the internet.

I had to pinch myself to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. Two R01 scores - 1 percentile (grant on mutant IDH gliomas) and 3 percentile (diffuse midline glioma)! Wouldn’t have been possible without my wonderful lab, co-investigators (@CarlKoschmann) & department support (@UCSFimaging).

@SallyingAbout @guide2research @mbeisen Did anyone notice that the majority of this list works in medicine? In fairness, I do too but I don’t think the majority of the world’s “best scientists” do. This is another artifact of the H index.

@AdrianoAguzzi Get the dicom stack, we’ll print you a 3D replica that you can mount on your handlebars as a reminder to take it easy on the next downslope…

@kaidi_wu @Lola_UMich 2/2 If you do high quality work the boundaries between the two will melt away and you will realize they are both part of the same continuum.

Myth 4: Industry jobs are just as intellectually fulfilling I have spoken with many ex-academics who bemoan the lack of intellectual fulfillment in industry as they used to find in academia. One reason is that industry jobs tend to be skill-centric, not domain-centric. In academia, you spend decades developing domain knowledge and becoming an established intellectual authority on that topic. It's a rewarding structure that provides space for you to nerd out on something you're intrinsically interested in. In industry, you develop a skill (UX research, data science, management) to be used in different domains. In a competitive market where everyone hops places every 2-3 years, you are supposed to be agnostic to which sector you apply your skills to.

⚠️For PhDs who are thinking about jumping ship and diving into industry: Industry isn't necessarily better than academia. I have straddled both worlds. Here are 5 MYTHS about academia vs. industry:

@kaidi_wu @Lola_UMich 1/2 As someone who spent 10 years in industry first in big pharma, then in a biotech startup, went through two M&A’s, moved back to academia for the last 25 years, and started a few companies too, let me add that both industry and academia have strengths and weaknesses.

PROPHESY: When AI perfects deep-fakes of people, places, & things, no news will be trusted. Even those who previously believed fake news will think their fake news is faked. At that moment a tear in the spacetime continuum will open and swallow all social media from the internet.

academics who’ve figured out nutrition, especially parents: do you have an easy go-to breakfast, do you even eat breakfast? what do you bring as a lunch on days you have to teach, or do you buy something? I’ve been subsisting on iced coffee till dinner & I have to do better.
