I had to pinch myself to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. Two R01 scores - 1 percentile (grant on mutant IDH gliomas) and 3 percentile (diffuse midline glioma)! Wouldn’t have been possible without my wonderful lab, co-investigators (@CarlKoschmann) & department support (@UCSFimaging).

@SallyingAbout @guide2research @mbeisen Did anyone notice that the majority of this list works in medicine? In fairness, I do too but I don’t think the majority of the world’s “best scientists” do. This is another artifact of the H index.

1 in 10 of the top 100 ‘best’ scientists are named Michael or Eric, but only 3% are female, according to @guide2research. Putting aside the obvious flaws of the H-index, these numbers are disheartening. Thanks to @mbeisen for sharing. research.com/scientists-ran…

Myth 4: Industry jobs are just as intellectually fulfilling I have spoken with many ex-academics who bemoan the lack of intellectual fulfillment in industry as they used to find in academia. One reason is that industry jobs tend to be skill-centric, not domain-centric. In academia, you spend decades developing domain knowledge and becoming an established intellectual authority on that topic. It's a rewarding structure that provides space for you to nerd out on something you're intrinsically interested in. In industry, you develop a skill (UX research, data science, management) to be used in different domains. In a competitive market where everyone hops places every 2-3 years, you are supposed to be agnostic to which sector you apply your skills to.

⚠️For PhDs who are thinking about jumping ship and diving into industry: Industry isn't necessarily better than academia. I have straddled both worlds. Here are 5 MYTHS about academia vs. industry:

@kaidi_wu @Lola_UMich 1/2 As someone who spent 10 years in industry first in big pharma, then in a biotech startup, went through two M&A’s, moved back to academia for the last 25 years, and started a few companies too, let me add that both industry and academia have strengths and weaknesses.

PROPHESY: When AI perfects deep-fakes of people, places, & things, no news will be trusted. Even those who previously believed fake news will think their fake news is faked. At that moment a tear in the spacetime continuum will open and swallow all social media from the internet.

academics who’ve figured out nutrition, especially parents: do you have an easy go-to breakfast, do you even eat breakfast? what do you bring as a lunch on days you have to teach, or do you buy something? I’ve been subsisting on iced coffee till dinner & I have to do better.
