@packyM @jack Implement downvotes. On twitter, if 500 people love your post and 500 loathe it, you’re rewarded — with downvotes, you’re ignored, as it should be.

If you woke up tomorrow as @jack and could do anything you wanted with Twitter - products, features, biz model, acquisitions, go wild! - what would you do? (Note: Don’t say edit button, you’re more creative than that)

@dhh And to be clear, nobody has any hope of reclaiming / rehabilitating the term in the eyes of the public — nor would many even care to

@dhh Hackers are a very distinct subculture and definitely not a synonym for programmer. Society often linguistically associates groups with crimes committed by their members (e.g. the Roma), but it’s not something I endorse

14 years ago, I was honored to be recognized as “Hacker of the year” by O’Reilly and Google at OSCON. But ever since its meant getting asked over and over and over again if I’m really good at breaking into computers! 🤦‍♂️

I think a lot about how Feynman got his Nobel Prize from “piddling around with wobbly plates”. I’m always looking for wobbly plates to piddle with. And of course the point isn’t to get the Prize, but to enjoy the piddling

@aarondotrb @palmerj3 @kenwheeler If a company I worked for ever said “you under estimated, so now you must work overtime (paid or unpaid)” I would hand in my notice on the spot. That is not the behaviour of a professional team.

Why does twitter keep unliking this thread? I’ve liked it several times and I keep going back to it to find that all my likes are removed. Heads up @naval @joerogan

@palmerj3 It’s a lot like HR, in that letting people ignore it today feels like a burden lifted but the long-term effects slowly poison teams. It’s also fundamentally a resourcing / organizational values question. ICs will never solve those problems unless they can change the org.

@palmerj3 There’s also a lot of defeatism out there. A lot of teams are maintaining multiple legacy systems and testing strategies, so any effort to improve things is looked at like a burden.

A few weeks I wrote out what I've been doing to improve my baseline happiness. I originally wrote it to send only to personal friends. Some of them encouraged me to share it publicly. I hope its useful to some of you! bit.ly/jkanguide

@dhh Feels like there's two competing visions: the web as a collection of annotated, interconnected documents vs a way to ship byte code around

Tinkering with the code that runs in your browser is a beautiful part of the web's maker culture. It also allows you to audit/block/disable all the junk that gets sent to that browser in the form of trackers and what have you. It's worth protecting.

Rails 6 is going to ship with Webpacker as our default JavaScript bundler. And by default, source maps are going to be turned on in production. Sure, you can turn it off, but I hope you won't. Let's make it easier to learn from others how to build the web. #issuecomment-458216151" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">github.com/rails/webpacke…

@brian_armstrong Cool business model for a VPN. The VPN handles payments, keeps customers and homeowners isolated from one another. The homeowner just has to keep their internet up and they get paid. It’s Airbnb for Fios

Feeling nostalgic: what are some articles, essays, blogposts etc that would go into a compilation called "the people's oral history of the internet"?
