Those were extraordinary times, when the three of us stood side by side and conquered Chess Olympiads and major events around the world. Some of the archival material surprised even me—I was seeing pieces of our own past for the first time, and it brought back memories I didn’t realize I still carried so vividly. In writing Invisible Democracy, I felt compelled to talk about strongmen for the sense of urgency chapter. The strongmen section became so long that I had to reorganize again. I know I'll have to make a cutoff, but I really wish there weren't so many examples flooding in.

@robertwiblin @GuiveAssadi I've recently wondered whether the center-squeeze phenomenon also occurs in party-list PR systems, potentially underrepresenting center-oriented parties. But this is a harder question than it initially seems because you have to measure how much they should have gotten instead.

@robertwiblin @GuiveAssadi Vote transfers (the preferential flow you mention) like IRV can still squeeze out middle candidates when first-choice preferences divide around the center and the middle candidate gets the fewest first-choice votes (eliminating them).

We often see elections generate huge shifts in policy even where public opinion on those topics moved little if at all. It's actually so typical it's hard to notice how strange a property this is for a voting / governing system.
