Easter, if explained by my garden From my journal - April 1, 2018 Today I planted my annual garden. New life into soil that (to the casual observer) looks to have been lifeless for a while. Underneath, in the blessed darkness, life is thriving. Worms chewing up what they’ve been given and creating the elements necessary for life. Secret networks of fungi miles long sending messages of resistance all winter. Everything in here is made of creation and destruction. The decay of things that used to live is feeding what wants to live now. My garden, like the one you’ve likely read about, has snakes. I held three in my hands just yesterday. There are guardians at the gates and invaders. There are little life-and-death battles happening all over if you look really close. This whole thing is a grace economy. Grace wins every time. The failures of last year feed this year. The plant doesn’t decide what its elements become after decay. It doesn’t decide if it will give itself away. It just happens. The rain falls (or doesn’t); the sun shines (or doesn’t) - and none of it depends on how perfect the gardener is. That doesn’t mean attention and care aren’t necessary - too much of this or too little of that, and it’s all over. The difference is that I’m required to listen to the life that’s in the garden and follow its lead - it won’t let me force it, and it always knows what it needs most. The dark soil beneath us was never dead - it’s the most alive thing in here. Death doesn’t make sense in this economy. It’s all self-giving creation, over and over again. How lucky I am to bear witness.

The economic disruption from AI is real. But underneath it, something different is building. And I think it's just as dangerous. We are not prepared for the meaning-making crisis coming. aaronwhite.substack.com/p/the-purpose-…

This week I opened for Hannibal Buress. Let me explain.... Earlier this week I attended @awilkinson's IP3 Conference. 150 entrepreneurs and creatives from around the world traveled to Victoria, Canada, for three days of conversations and activities, all while surrounded by breathtaking nature. This year’s theme was comedy. Some comedy legends were in attendance: - Lead writer for The Simpsons - Founder of “The Onion” - Comedian Hannibal Buress One night we all went to a theater in downtown Victoria for a performance. There would be music, improv, and standup. Hannibal would close out the show. Earlier that day, the conference organizers asked if I was up for a surprise set. Of course I said yes. Halfway through show, the hosts broke the news: “Coming to the stage, our next guest is a standup comedian in China. Please welcome…Will Mannon!” I grabbed the mic and kicked off my set…in Chinese! People looked shellshocked. They thought I would say one sentence then switch to English. But I kept going, all in Mandarin. The laughs started to build. It was so absurd. They knew the punchlines based on my intonation and timing, even though nobody understood a word. I performed my opener and a super-abbreviated version of my closer. Less than two minutes total. Then I thanked the crowd (in Chinese), dropped the mic and exited stage left, to what sounded like big applause. Hannibal called me out during his set: “Shoutout to my guy with the Mandarin comedy. How crazy was that?!” Later he grabbed my number and said I could try out a similar gag sometime at his new club in Brooklyn (maybe mixed in with an English set, who knows). “People will love it.” The rest of the conference I kept getting props from people for the set. It was the perfect icebreaker to meet way more attendees. Andrew also gave me a shoutout the next morning at breakfast. But most importantly, I made an unforgettable memory at the best conference I’ve ever attended (on my 32nd birthday no less). What a rush. I’ve studied Chinese for thousands of hours since college. I do it for pure enjoyment – I simply love how it feels to say the words, to always get better, to connect with people a world apart. But sometimes, following your internally-driven passion can have surprise external payoffs. Sometimes you get to open for a famous comedian at a world-class conference. Today, a wonderful outing with the Harvard Club of Dallas. I had the joy of visiting the Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple in Frisco to see the intersection of the architecture and religious symbolism of the community. We were welcomed so warmly by the temple’s teachers and members

The world doesn't need more indifference; it needs more courage to face the uncomfortable. This week, I’m reflecting on how looking away — from suffering, from fear, from our own pain — costs us more than we realize. I wrote about it here: aaronwhite.substack.com/p/dont-look-aw…

@will_mannon Agreed! Been to the Cellar a bunch in NYC as well. Always tons of fun. Don’t know if you remember this, but we both have lots of overlap in interests in the Transcendentalists as well. Spent a lot of my academic focus and research there

Full circle moment here. For years I loved going to watch standup in LA. The Laugh Factory, Hollywood Improv, but especially the Comedy Store. After shows I would sometimes find the comedians at the Comedy Store outdoor bar on Sunset Blvd. I’d tell them I liked their set, maybe rehash some of their jokes. Sometimes they were really cool about it (Theo Von), other times a bit too cool for school. But in 7 years living in LA I had this experience dozens of times. Tonight, as I get off stage in Taipei, this guy comes up to me. And he goes “Hey man I loved your set, it was hilarious.” Then we chatted for a few moments and took this pic. Ultimately it’s a small thing. But as I thought back to all those nights under the red lights of the Comedy Store bar in West Hollywood…man did this feel good. I officially have a fan.

Growing up, we didn’t have many rituals in my house, but going to the State Fair of Texas was almost a sacrament, especially for my dad. I get to continue that now. Can you tell it was someone’s first time on a rollercoaster? 🤣
