Bioinformatics and computational biology are very different fields, although some people can (and do) work on both

@randomdan1el @luispedrocoelho @emanuelvgo @antisens3 @istecnico @SCSatCMU I think academically, computational biology is about developing algorithms (perhaps using a pen and a paper) to analyze biological data, whereas bioinformatics is about implementing and applying these algorithms for the actual analysis of data

@luispedrocoelho @emanuelvgo @antisens3 @istecnico @SCSatCMU At UMinho there is Informatics Engineering and Computer Science. They are mainly lectured at the informatics department, and probably more than half the courses are shared. The former is more applied, whereas the latter has a stronger mathematics component.

@vdlorenzo_CNB @OdedRechavi I always believed that a review article in a decent journal is much more visible and and accessible than chapters in edited books, at least based on citations. Authored books, however, still have their own niche.

@OdedRechavi Are typical multi-authored books ever read at all? I have a bunch of chapters—some quite good—but they're never cited ☹️. Other than PR I do not see much value in them or any return of the time invested. My office is decorated with books I contributed to but hardly ever opened 😅
