A little known nugget is that the original Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway station was located bang in the middle of what is now the Delhi Golf Club, close to the villages of Ghiaspur and Azimganj. When New Delhi was built, the railway line was shifted to its present location
Bharati Chaturvedi@Bharati09

The one club that ought to be taken over is the Delhi Golf Club. A massive patch of artificially maintained, water-guzzling green that has zero ecological value. Serving a 1000 or so people who play a slow sport that is exclusionist.

Angul takes a leap in agri-export with the successful export of 20 quintals of naturally matured Amrapalli mangoes to Italy. Facilitated by ORMAS-supported FPO through farmer mobilization, procurement, sorting, and grading support. @CMO_Odisha @IPR_Odisha

While the electric fan experiment didn't work out, a massive oil flame used to be lit on top of the India Gate dome on important occasions for many years. With the increasing lighting around the area and the staining caused by the oil, this was later abandoned

The January 1931 issue of The Architectural Review studied New Delhi, the new capital of India which was to be opened in Feb. 1931. Here it mentions the original plan for the All-India Memorial Arch (India Gate) to emit memorial smoke from its top, by means of gas & electric fans.

@gauravsabnis The word itself is very interesting. According to Tulpule's Old Marathi Dictionary, it appears in Rukmini Swayamvara from the 13th century and is a derivative of the Persian Rusvat (same origin as Rishwat?). This makes it among the oldest Perso-Arabic borrowings in Marathi.

The Indo Surinamese or the Hindoestanen are unique amongst the Caribbean Indians in preserving their native languages. Awadhi and Bhojpuri or a mix of the two, is still their lingua franca. Even their music Baithak Gaana retains a lot more Indian influence than the usual Chutney
Narendra Modi@narendramodi

The Indian diaspora is a living bridge of the India-Netherlands partnership. Our decision to extend OCI Card eligibility for the Surinamese Hindustani community from the fourth generation to the sixth generation has been enthusiastically received by the diaspora in the Netherlands!

the pronunciation of the name Muhammad I grew up hearing was "Mhommad", is this a Kokni or Bombay specific thing? I think standard Urdu diction is Mohammad

@abdaal I think this is a different one. I saw this at Odisha state museum and it was discovered from Dharmasala, Jajpur. Dates back to 8th century AD.

India’s forests are also forests of memory. Hidden within them are forlorn graves, weathered memorials, old bungalows & stories lost to time. This piece for @htTweets traces the stories of two foresters from another era through forgotten memorials hidden in the woods. A short🧵

Exiling political prisoners to distant colonies was a standard British imperial practice. Napoleon died in St Helena, which was East India Company territory. Col Arabi, who led the Arab revolt in 19th century Egypt, ended up in Sri Lanka. Frankly the phenomenon deserves a book.

An interesting nugget in this is how Penang was the original Kaala Pani. Taken on lease in 1786, it grew so rapidly using convict labour that in 1805, it became the fourth Presidency of India at par with Calcutta or Madras before eventually losing out to Singapore in the 1830s
