Joshua Meservey presents a strong argument in this article that Somalia’s objections rest on a long-defunct fiction of unity, that the AU itself acknowledged Somaliland’s case as historically unique and self-justified in 2005, and that recognition would not violate colonial-era borders.

HAPPENING NOW at Downing Street — thousands from the #Somaliland community and its allies have gathered in solidarity with the people of the Republic of Somaliland, demanding the right to self-determination and calling on the United Kingdom to re-recognise Somaliland, its former British Protectorate. Led by @UKSLAlliance, alongside British Somaliland grassroots organisations, Somalilanders, friends of Somaliland, democrats, and advocates of justice and international law, the message is unmistakable: the voice of Somaliland cannot—and will not—be ignored. This is a united, peaceful, and historic mobilisation calling on Britain to uphold moral responsibility, historical truth, and democratic principles. ✊ Recognition is overdue. ⚖️ Justice is non-negotiable. 📢 More speakers, statements, and developments to follow shortly — stay tuned for live updates from Downing Street @HornDiplomat

Sir Gavin Williamson CBE MP, @GavinWilliamson a long-time and consistent supporter of the Republic of Somaliland, delivered a strong and unambiguous message today at Somaliland’s UK rally in London, addressed directly to the British government and the Prime Minister. In his remarks, Sir Gavin highlighted the historic moment in which Somaliland has been recognized by another country - a development many once said would never happen. He stressed, however, that this milestone must mark the beginning of decisive action, not the end of the journey. He stated that Somaliland has waited patiently for far too long for Great Britain and successive Prime Ministers to recognise the political and democratic reality on the ground, and that the time for continued delay has now passed. He underscored that Somaliland is a nation defined by freedom, democracy, peace, and responsible governance. Sir Gavin made clear that the terrorism, destruction, and instability afflicting the region do not originate in Somaliland, but elsewhere, and called on the British government to acknowledge this reality honestly and without hesitation. He urged the UK to open its eyes, to recognise what must be done, and to stand firmly with the people of Somaliland. Concluding his address, he reaffirmed his long-standing solidarity with the Somaliland cause and declared that recognizing Somaliland is not only right but also just. He expressed confidence that Somaliland will prevail, because truth, democracy, and justice are on its side. The people of Somaliland sincerely thank Sir Gavin Williamson CBE MP for his principled leadership, unwavering support, and continued advocacy for justice, democracy, and the rightful recognition of the Republic of Somaliland.

The Somaliland–Ethiopia relationship delivers mutual benefits across political, security, economic, and people-to-people dimensions, and the recognition of Somaliland would further enrich this partnership by deepening cooperation, enhancing regional stability, and advancing the shared interests of both governments and their peoples. I kindly encourage everyone to watch the interview, which provides important context and insights on this issue.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, @gidonsaar, reaffirmed Israel’s sovereign right to conduct its foreign policy independently, stating: “Nobody will determine for Israel who we recognize and who we maintain diplomatic relations with.” This statement underscores Israel’s adherence to the fundamental principle of state sovereignty in international relations and its commitment to making diplomatic decisions free from external pressure, in line with international norms and its national interests. @IsraelMFA

Foreign Minister @gidonsaar on his historic state visit to Somaliland: It is a great honor to conduct the first official state visit to Somaliland at the invitation of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. The visit is also a message - we are determined to advance with momentum the relations between Israel and Somaliland. Today we held significant discussions with the President and his senior government officials regarding the full scope of relations between us. The mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries are not against anyone. Our shared goal is to promote the well-being of our 2 peoples and countries. In Hargeisa I clarified: Only Israel will determine for itself whom it recognizes and with whom to maintain state relations. The President of Somaliland informed me that he accepts the invitation of Prime Minister Netanyahu and will come for an official visit to Israel.
