Would love to connect with more #NGSSchat, #OpenSciEd, #SciEd, #AcademicTwitter friends where the skies are blue. Same handle. I have stayed because so many educators I want to reach & learn from haven’t made the transition, but the time has come, friends, to make the jump.

So. This was a tough week. Spent a day home sick as I was physically ill from the stress. Went back next day to be there for the active shooter drill. Turned into a real-life scenario where we were locked down for three hours with little info - locked in our rooms with police everywhere and rumors flying. Helicopters buzzing overhead. Turns out a student had found a bullet in a desk… some others things that I can’t discuss… students sent home early. Came back today and spoke directly with each class of students. We read this comic from Jim Zub about a school shooting in Miles Morales high school where they discuss the never-ending cycle of getting upset over a school event and then the protest and outcry disappears until the next one…. Students read and discussed their reaction, what they want us to know, and what they want us to do. I will compile and share some of their amazing answers. These kids live this reality. Real fears. Biggest fear is that the adults in our society don’t care about them. We turned the conversation into actionable empowering actions. Then… we read the Spider-Man comic where he is at Ground Zero on 9/11 - that lesson was put off until today because of the week. We talked about the hows and why - not an emotional dumping from me - but what questions do they have, what do they want to know, what rumors to dispel about that day and actions after. We connect 9/11 as a thread to the crusades, imperialism, WW1 and 2, the Cold War and more. (students told me I should write a book about how history echoes through 9/11… something I am thinking about…) What happened then matters and echoes now. We talked about racism and religion - the KKK as “Christian” and Taliban as “Muslim” - religion can be wonderful and also twisted as a tool of hate. Students spoke up and out about how to help bring us together, sharing their own stories and experiences. The students all thanked me for being real and honest with them, With tackling difficult conversations as we have been these past three weeks. I know I helped them today and they very much helped me. I question so much about my role and future in education lately, but today completely reminded me of my why. This as former students stopped in to see my today to talk about their feelings as they knew I’d listen. LGBTQ students who I have never taught - but stopped in to ask me to hang a sign about the first GSA club meeting because they had taken a class with another teacher in my classroom and knew, just by what is in my room, that they were seen and accepted. I am freaking emotionally spent and am going to bed at 8:00. I am proud of myself today. What we do matters, every day.

@Sci_Rem @pennstateCSATS @MCIU My daughter was one of the winners. It was great to hear about the rich innovations that students can engage with at Penn State.

@abeslo @OpenSciEd Definitely!! I’ll have to put it together so it’s shareable. Maybe a collab is in our future - a NSTA audio-only session! 😂
