Sachin is such a big star in his own country (although losing a bit of relevance now) but I don't know why he needs this sort of validation from the overseas athletes. Clearly this is not a friendship and Federer is just meeting him as a random stranger. He meets multiple people, whom he doesn't even know, at Wimbledon every year. Probably Sachin has not gotten over the fact that Maria Sharapova once asked, "Sachin, who?" So, he is now trying to prove top tennis players don't just know him, they are even friends with him.

For most of his career Sunil Gavaskar batted for the self respect of a third world country and its despairing middle class whose ultimate ambition was a government job or a green card. The Sehwags, Gangulys and Dhonis who followed have given us ample reason to celebrate, but for most of his cricketing career Sunil Gavaskar would just make sure that millions could get up and face their bus or train commute the next morning.
