शॉर्ट सर्विस कमीशन (SSC) के तहत सेवा करने वाले अधिकारियों, जिन्होंने 5, 6, 7 या अधिकतम 14 वर्ष तक सेवा की हो, उन्हें ‘Ex-Major’ या ‘Ex-Captain’ जैसे संबोधनों से ही पहचाना जाएगा, और ‘रिटायर्ड’ शब्द का प्रयोग उनके लिए उचित नहीं होगा. इसलिये गौरव आर्य - सिर्फ़ Ex Major Gaurav Arya कहे जाने चाहिये, रिटायर्ड मेजर गौरव आर्य या आर्मी वेटेरन नहीं. भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों की नीतियों और मानकों के अनुसार, किसी भी सेना अधिकारी को ‘रिटायर्ड’ संबोधन से सम्मानित करने का अधिकार आमतौर पर तभी प्राप्त होता है, जब उसने 20 वर्ष की पेंशन योग्य सेवा पूरी कर ली हो, जो औपचारिक सेवानिवृत्ति की पात्रता प्रदान करती है.
