Our work on understanding the influence of topography on large-scale changes observed on Comet 67P's surface was published in @AAS_PSJ this week, so here's a thread describing why it's exciting. ☄️🛰 @ESA_Rosetta @IamComet67P @CornellAstro

Quantifying Morphological Changes and Sediment Transport Pathways on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko doi.org/10.1029/2022JE… Sediment transport appears linked to the location of most direct sunlight on the comet's surface and does not occur on the top of the comet's lobes.

We have retrieved signal with @NASA_Orion after an expected loss of signal when the spacecraft flew directly behind the Moon. You can see Earth in the distance. That's us. #Artemis nasa.gov/artemislive

The @IAGAIG Planetary Geomorphology Image of the Month for November is now available! This month, Abhinav Jindal explores large-scale, topographically influenced changes in the smooth terrains of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, as seen by @ESA_Rosetta: planetarygeomorphology.wordpress.com/2022/11/01/top…

🪐We’re always big fans of Saturn, but Neptune’s rings are giving us all the feels in this new @NASAWebb image. It’s the clearest view of the rings of the most distant planet in our solar system in more than 30 years. nasa.gov/feature/goddar…

Smooth terrains are not unique to 67P and have been observed on all other comets for which we have resolved surface images. Thus, we can use the tools we have developed here at the Imhotep region of 67P to understand the broader evolution of cometary smooth terrains.

Hence, surface activity is not primarily controlled by surface/subsurface heterogeneities resulting from 67Ps early evolution. Instead, reradiation from topography alone can create local enhancements in activity.
