🦔EngineAI opened a 129,000 square foot humanoid robot factory in Shenzhen this week and claims it can roll a robot off the line every 15 minutes, which works out to 35,000 units per year. The company started in October 2023, has raised 1 billion yuan ($140 million) in funding, and has a second factory planned in Zhengzhou with another 10,000 units of annual capacity. The flagship product is called the T800, a deliberate Terminator reference. Add in Unitree, Leju Robot, AgiBot, UBTECH, and Xpeng, and China's collective humanoid manufacturing capacity sits north of 100,000 units per year. Shenzhen targets $14 billion in humanoid robotics revenue by 2027. My Take The headline production number sounds impressive until you look at what these robots actually do. Most of the units coming off these lines walk, run, perform kung fu choreography, and patrol streets next to Shenzhen police officers for the cameras. The hands do not work yet at the level industrial labor demands, and the operating environments are scripted. I watch the buildout closely because the manufacturing capacity is genuine, but the commercial use case still lives mostly in research labs, universities, and government showcase projects that cannot pay enough to justify a 35,000 unit annual run rate. EngineAI raised 1 billion yuan before its product hit volume production. Chinese state capital and provincial industrial funds underwrote the manufacturing scale-up regardless of whether private demand exists yet. China ran the same playbook with solar panels in the 2010s and EVs in the 2020s, where domestic overcapacity drove unit costs down until the technology became globally competitive. Tesla Optimus, Figure, Boston Dynamics, and Agility do not have access to patient capital at that scale. If Chinese humanoids hit useful capability before the US cost curve catches up, the labor displacement story plays out with Chinese-built hardware running on Chinese-built models. Hedgie🤗

US NAVY ESCORTS SHIPS THROUGH STRAIT OF HORMUZ U.S. Navy is quietly assisting commercial vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz, including a Greek supertanker carrying 2 million barrels of crude en route to India. Officials said the support is limited in scope and not a full restart of “Project Freedom,” with plans to assist around a dozen ships in the coming days amid heightened regional risks.

Trump is objectively the worst negotiator I've ever seen. Preannounces deals before they're signed, locks himself into weakness, the other side smells desperation and reneges. Count the Russia/Ukraine "deals" he's announced. Count how many closed. A good chunk of the country bought the "Art of the Deal" myth. Turns out he's teaching the opposite: a masterclass in what not to do. There is no art. Just a guy with the temperament and IQ of a chipmunk negotiating for 330 million people.

So after a limpet mine with 7kg of explosives was found on tanker hull in Russian port after a stopover in Antwerp, can we declare Belgium a terrorist state? Or do we need a 3 year EU-wide investigation that will show it was just some diving enthusiasts recreating the Battle of the Scheldt for their historical reenactment society?

The Hormuz Letter
The Hormuz Letter@HormuzLetter·
BREAKING: Iran says contrary to what the US claims, the now fully leaked "Memorandum of Understanding" contains no Iranian commitments to hand over nuclear stockpiles, remove equipment, shut down nuclear facilities, or even commit to not build a nuclear bomb. Instead, all nuclear issues are deferred to a 60 day period of negotiations after signing, per Fars News. For this period to start, the US would need to accept no nuclear commitments from Iran, agree to release $100 billion of Iranian frozen assets, lift the naval blockade, lift all oil and petrochemical sanctions during the negotiation period, pay $270 billion in war reparations, and accept Hormuz under "full permanent sovereign Iranian management and authority" at pre-war traffic levels with no US presence.
