@AKellyLady Somehow, I wound up doing a bunch of research on the red wine antioxidant, resveratrol. There is a whole series of international conferences on this niche topic of RED WINE!
Need I say, it's pretty self-explanatory why this was a pretty sweet area of research to get into :)
English

I have been invited to be an expert on a panel where complimentary wine and beer are being served. Free stuff while talking about my opinion on my field? Having a PhD is already more than I dreamed it would be. #phdlife

@CrystalUminski This is an example of somebody who wants to be a coauthor feeling left out and inserting themselves into your work without your consent.
Authorship may be expected, and now you have a decision to make in terms of order.
Cats aren't only stealth predators, but savvy academics.😜

My cat contributed this to my comprehensive exam proposal when I stepped out of the room. I think her addition very clearly articulates how I am feeling right now under the pressure of a fast-approaching deadline 😹 #phdlife

@MuhaimenAyyub @PhDVoice It can be, but doesn't have to be.
I have seen really toxic environments (my PhD was just that), and really healthy and supportive environments.
Sometimes red flags come up during a job/gradschool interview, but other times it takes days to years to identify toxic settings.
English

Is academia really toxic ? A🧵
From the past couple of days I've been reading so many tweets about the toxic environment in academia.
Being a PhD candidate I am enjoying my each day and I am pretty sure that once I'll 👇🏻

A friend in private sector told me his company gives them periodic #mentalhealth days.
This doesn't happen in academia, but if your uni gave you a #MentalHealthMatters day, what would you do?

@PhDVoice Wow. Potential coercion.
1. Who asked you to write the letter - your advisor or somebody else?
2. Who do you submit the letter to?
3. Are SOLICITED letters allowed in a T&P packet?
English

Anonymous Question:
“My advisor is up for tenure and I've been asked to write a rec letter on their advising. I believe they should get the promotion, but I have a lot of criticism too. Is writing a less "flowery" rec letter helpful in this...👇

How many of us have done a bunch of free labor for a publishing company, just for an extra line on the CV?
All the while, our university was paying for the labor, and then being charged to subscribe to the journal!

Great thread - I agree w/ much (not all) of it. Peer-review publishing is indeed an essential way to disseminate good science and advance knowledge. BUT, the current model is financially ridiculous and encourages some shady practices. #phdchat #AcademicChatter #phdlife
English

@Faria_Tuhi @CouragePhD @PhDfriendSana @PhDVoice @yourPhDpal It's an honest way to "pad" your CV. Having a single line that says "PhD" w/ year doesn't say much.
Showing you have lots of experience within it by expanding it out is what you need.
Can also add "Supervisory Experience" if you have mentored MS, undergrads, assistants, etc.
English

@Faria_Tuhi @CouragePhD @PhDfriendSana @PhDVoice @yourPhDpal This is challenging!
Consider a hybrid format CV/executive summary. Under PhD, include a brief narrative (or bullet points) of projects you have worked on, your role, skills used, etc.
Or separate section of "research projects" w/ brief description, responsibilities, etc.
English

How am I supposed to write work experiences in the CV which makes it more attractive? Due to my current #PHD, employers do not consider me of having much practically experienced. Any help?!

Interesting article in @NYTimes, but I don't foresee this benefiting academics. For every burnt out faculty member who leaves, there is a new #PhD or #postdoc willing to teach too many credits & do scholarship nights/weekends. #AcademicTwitter #phdlife

Great list.
If your prospective PhD advisor laughs when you ask #7, then you may want to continue your search elsewhere!
English

@PhD_Genie Because by working on the weekend, it will prove just how committed I am to my institution, and they will truly appreciate me, give me tenure and a raise and will recognize this sacrifice next time I ask them for a small favor.
That's the way it works, right? #AcademicChatter
English

Why would you work on a weekend?

@PhDMumLife @Momademia It is so unfortunate that so many have had a bad experience in academia.
My PhD was in a very toxic environment. I've seen other poor academic cultures.
But all are not bad - some are FANTASTIC. First 5 years in my current position was so fun, it didn't even feel like work!
English

@aktilaiyan The same completely arbitrary dividing line that allows one to be too young to be US president one day (but old enough to hold other public office), but sufficiently old to hold that position the next.
English

Today, a staff member who didn't know me mistook me for a student looking for a professor.
The irony? I was looking for that faculty member bc I am on the promotion & tenure committee and needed to sign his pre-tenure review summary!
