@TheAusInstitute Great idea but subsidies mess with the market - just reduce income tax and help drive productivity!

Breaking - the PM has asked for modelling on a potential new gas tax. That's great news! And, fortunately, we've released analysis on the topic just this morning. Read more: theaus.in/4lACKHa

@LouiChristopher Hopefully the case becoming clearer for a higher level of consumption taxation and lower income tax / less reliance on monetary policy as the only tool to moderate spending when things get too hot

Correct me if I am wrong, but the RBA had a target assumption for the headline CPI of 4.2% (annual) for the June 2026 Quarter. And with this target, it assumed Oil prices at $USD 64 a barrel (verses the current $92)?

@footyindustryAU @SharksRcb Rugby is part of the social Fabric in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa - it’s more like a religion. No other sport comes close to the influence on the people. Other sports are barely relevant from an aid/geopolitical leverage perspective.

Wallabies have deserved all their praise in recent times. But rightly deserve to be hammered for that performance today. Diabolical first half. Diabolical. Discipline woeful. Couldn’t adapt to Pumas’ aerial game. Pushed countless unnecessary offloads. Grim. #AUSvARG

@cjoye Good piece. Feels like the only way out is to increase consumption taxes on the proviso that the states exercise some fiscal restraint. The next term is probably the best chance in decades of seeing a reform agenda get broad support.

Australia could become akin to Asia’s Ibiza over the next two to three decades. A beach resort for well-heeled members of the Indo-Pacific that trades off tourism and natural amenities rather than any intellectual edge. It certainly satisfies the popular stereotype of bronzed brawn being our primary competitive advantage... afr.com/policy/economy…

@GrogsGamut How is this still a topic of discussion? It is like the concept of an electoral mandate doesn’t exist. So weird.

As it stands right now (10pm) Labor has achieved the biggest two party preferred result since Menzies in 1966. (56.9). It might slip below Fraser in 1975 (55.7) when all votes are counted. But it’s certainly labor’s best ever.

@georgieparker Probably an element of both turf maintenance, and giving domestic cricketers the chance to have some familiarity with the ground before playing at the G on the international stage.

Serious question… How come men’s shield cricket is allowed to play at the MCG with barely any crowd yet AFLW isn’t cos ‘not viable’. I don’t care that shield is, like go off kings, I’d just like women’s footy to be able to as well.

@TMFScottP Super is great but consumption taxes need to rise to reflect the increased purchasing power of a cohort that is insensitive to borrowing rates.

Partisan politics aside, Wayne is right. Super, as flawed as it is, remains one of the very best financial and economic policies of the last four decades. We should guard the system zealously, and make it better, stopping others from undermining it. #auspol #ausbiz
Wayne Swan@SwannyQLD

Super is giving more people over time higher retirement incomes so they can make a choice about retiring when they choose. This wasn't possible twenty years ago when all they had was the age pension.

@Jack_Quigley Every team needs a permanent home but the large kiwi population in Melbourne means playing 2 Brums games in Mel each year against NZ opposition would help make it work

@acljames In all seriousness, this makes a lot of sense. I’ve always like the idea of a barbarians style team, that plays 2-3 home games in a few different cities. Likely won’t work in practice, but it’s romantic in theory.

The Brumbies as a rugby club deserve so much better than Canberra as a city. So much sustained success and winning culture based on nobility and hard work. And the locals are just like “It’s a bit cold tonight, don’t think I’ll go.”
