I should probably introduce myself. And let people know where I stand in regards to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I want there to be no mistake. I am Bryan Summers. I am 49 years old. I'll tell a little of my history and then bare my testimony. Below I'm on my favorite trail in the world. The Timberline Trail on Mt Hood.

This is deeply beautiful.
Mrs Coach@FriedScones

My firstborn is 50. He was ten days overdue. Nine pounds. July 12, 1976—the hottest summer I can remember, a record-breaking heat wave in Provo. I had gained sixty pounds and was so uncomfortable that my husband and his track teammate, Ted, took me golfing, convinced all that walking might start labor. That was a long day! Nothing. Then this round-faced, chubby baby finally arrived, announcing himself with a fierce cry that seemed to say, I’ve already had enough. He cried all the time. He wouldn’t eat. He wouldn’t sleep. I was a brand-new mother. I thought surely I was doing everything wrong. Life has not been kind to him. Alcohol stole half his life. His marriage ended. His sons carry wounds that have left little room for forgiveness. He’s drifted in and out of homelessness, struggled to hold a job, and carries enough regret and shame to break any man. And yet… There is still something deeply good in him. Tenderness has somehow survived where so much else has been lost. I have seen kindness in him that makes no logical sense given all the wreckage. Why he is still here, after all these years and all the ways he has brushed against death, is a mystery known only to his Savior. Motherhood can often bring obsession with fixing what is broken. Sometimes it is simply refusing to stop loving. I am eternally his mother. What a sacred stewardship that has been—to walk beside one soul through grief and hope, failure and mercy, believing that God’s story is never finished simply because ours has become too painful to read. Happy 50th birthday, my son. I have loved you from your first cry. I will love you until my last breath. And beyond that, I trust the Savior to carry what you and I cannot. Happy birthday.

My experience, and this is no doubt uncharitable, is that the average person who tries to evangelize ‘Mormons’ fails at both. I think this is because the evangelizer both loves and despises the ‘Mormon’ at the same time. That particular combo creates sloppy thinking.
Chaise the Bloodstained Saint@WMCHerrington

@kylebeshears Yeah, unfortunately today one of the essentials of trying to evangelize Mormons is not simply knowing more about the Christian faith than the average Christian, but also knowing more about what the LDS church teaches than the average Latter-Day Saint.

Hey remember when Denzel Washington played Macbeth a REAL LIFE Scottish King and no one made a fuss about it? Why am I bringing this up? No particular reason

I guess I just see the shift differently. I think the last few decades have taught us to be more careful about what is doctrine vs what is interpretation - and to recognize that some things we accepted on their face in the past probably fall into the latter category. I don’t see that as a softening to appease; I see it as a maturation of how we treat revelation, and what we accept as revelation. Recognizing that every obscure quote in the JD isn’t binding on the church is a good thing. There are conflicting ideas held by past leaders, and in most cases they acknowledge they are speculating. We have a process for recognizing binding doctrine on the church - and we should limit church doctrines to those things that have gone through that process. Rightfully, every other church can and does do the same.

30 years ago, Mormons were much more monolithic in their beliefs. Today, many individual Wormans taken à la carte approach to their faith, thus making it easier for any one member of the LDS Church to say “Well that’s not what I believe at all.”
Kyle Beshears@kylebeshears

Me, an Evangelical pastor: “Here’s my best understanding of what LDS believe.” Evangelical: “Hey, LDS friend, is this what you believe?” LDS: “Yes, no, sort of; here’s what I believe, personally.” Evangelical: “Sweet, let’s talk.” My goal with 40 Questions About Mormonism 👇

And sometimes recorded by shorthand. Even a well-attested to lecture, like KFD, has minor discrepancies between accounts that could change meaning. For example, did JS say man's intelligence is "co-equal" with God (i.e., authority) or is man's intelligence "as immortal" as God (i.e., temporal), or both?

@WMCHerrington @PTSPentax @kylebeshears I appreciate that The bad faith actors make it much harder for those of you who are good faith actors. Too many Christians try to convince me I believe something I don't believe in order to then tell me what I don't believe is false. Seems backward but maybe it has worked once

@kylebeshears @WMCHerrington There is a reason we haven't canonized any of it. And if one of our leaders said something that we don't consider doctrinal it doesn't bother us. Our leaders are allowed to think out loud.

@kylebeshears @WMCHerrington God bless you! Seriously. God bless you! The other reason one needs to be careful with the JoD is that even if the quote is accurate how much of it was off the cuff musing? Utah Frontier speeches were much more freewheeling and improvisational than conference talks today.

@kylebeshears @WMCHerrington I can't wait for the BY papers! I love the JoD but I'm very clear sighted about how trustworthy it is. I take it with a huge grain of salt. And I can't take seriously anyone who proof texts it.

@actsofapostles_ @WMCHerrington Assuming the JoD quote is accurate, and not dependent on a quote in the Deseret News from 1874, which itself is based on shorthand notes from one of an apostle’s assistants. Looking forward to the BY papers for this reason. CDBY and Colonozer are great alternatives until then.

My son returned this week from a two year mission in Arkansas. The more missionaries from my family and ward that I see leave and return, the more I’m convinced that a farewell is really a homecoming and a homecoming is really a farewell.

@benlusty @actsofapostles_ Exactly. The comment that Acts QTs here is a perfect example. “The hardest part about trying to correct Mormonism is their stupidity”

Momentum is the silent multiplier nobody talks about enough. When you’re moving, even in small steps, everything just gets easier. Opportunities show up. Your confidence grows. Progress starts compounding. But the second you stop & start, stop & start, you lose it. Friction comes back. Doubt creeps in. And life suddenly feels ten times heavier. This isn’t just about business. It’s your health, your relationships, your goals, & your discipline. The game isn’t about being perfect. It’s about staying in motion. Protect your momentum like it’s your most valuable asset, because it really is. What’s one area where you’re going to keep the momentum alive today? Let's grow! 📈📈📈

.I should say though that this is the norm but there are exceptions.@kylebeshears being one of them. I find myself taking Kyle's criticism's very seriously and I do ponder them. But Kyle loves Latter-day Saints and does not despise them
