You can tell him the summer after he finishes high school and hopefully by then his identity, self worth and even a sense of direction in life will be a little established. I'd also recommend making sure he has tons of additional role models that he trusts. He might feel betrayed one day by you (even if just temporarily) & having a lot of other adults in his life that he trusts and can talk to, and who also might help smooth the betrayal over, will help.
