You seem to be under the impression renewables are forever. Some of the early offshore wind farms have already been decommissioned and thousands more turbines will be decommissioned in the decade ahead. The North Sea is quite an unforgiving environment and 20 years of turbine life a reasonable assumption. After that they need to be dismantled or refurbished. Both options are expensive.
James Taylor@cynicalkind

@afneil At least in another 20 years renewable will still be there, whereas, use once, fossil fuels won't be. Use some common sense.

@megagoose11 Simple answer: if the object has greater speed than orbital, it height will change and speed drop. Then reach a point where speed is less than orbital height will drop. Thus in an orbit there cant be more than 1 point at which is lowest and 1 highest.

Had a conversation last night with a neighbor who just bought a new (non-Tesla) EV. He really wanted the Tesla’s self-driving but couldn’t write a check to Elon Musk. So he is driving an inferior vehicle, and telling himself the other vendors will catch up in a few years.

@afneil Sovereign territory and yet NATO failed to join in when we were invaded in 82. Thanks USA for vetoing any NATO involvement. And we then joined the US in Afghanistan and Iraq. Jeesh we are so weak

The Falklands are now defended by a substantial and well-armed British garrison, Typhoon jets and the formidable Sky Sabre air defence system. Plus provision for rapid reinforcements. None of that existed in 1982. There’s no way Argentina could just ‘walk in and take over.’
𝐍𝐢𝐨𝐡 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠 🇮🇷 ✡︎@NiohBerg

Britain could lose the Falklands because of weak leadership. It's not the 80s anymore, there's no Thatcher in charge and the UK is a depressing shell of its former self. If Argentina simply walks in and takes over, possibly soon with Trump's approval, what exactly will Keir Starmer do? Send an angry worded letter? Would he even care at all?

The only reason drone warfare isn’t treated like nerve gas or land mines under international law is because it isn’t the West’s sons dying from it. As soon as it’s not Ivans being blown to bits but Johns and Toms the “discussion on the ethics of drone warfare” will become a mainstream talking point.
WarRoom Archives@WarRoomArchives

Drone warfare has reached such a level that many fighters have lost hope of escaping or resisting. For example, the final strike on the barracks is terrifying.

@McFaul No it is not the war, it is Iran who chose to take certain parts of the world hostage and block shipping traffic, not the United States. What does Switzerland have to do with it? Nothing. This is Iran aggression.

Another 90bn to Ukraine. A loan taken out against our names and that we, our kids, our grandkids in EU, will be paying the debt off on forever more. A money laundering operation. And most still can't see it as the cash goes around in the drum before their eyes.

Too much talking euro-boy. The reason why we are in trouble is because US heavily outproduces us. We can't replace these system fast, only Americans can. And the reason why we're not getting them is because everyone wants them. Taiwan, Kosovo. Ukraine...so your attitude does not impact their industry or our ability. Brussels talk a lot, but produces little.

The United States has just nuked its own arms export business. Not with a missile. With a phone call. Pete Hegseth rang Estonia’s defense minister and told him the HIMARS and Javelin deliveries are on hold. Indefinitely. Months, not weeks. No timeline. No alternative. Just: sorry, we’re busy bombing Iran. And that’s it. Twenty years of patient alliance-building, vaporized in a Monday morning call. Here’s what European defense planners now know for certain: American weapons come with an asterisk. The asterisk reads “subject to cancellation whenever Washington decides its own adventure takes priority.” You can sign the contracts. You can train your soldiers. You can build your entire defensive posture around US systems. And then one day, the ammo stops. No warning. No plan B. Estonia is already shopping elsewhere. So is everyone else, with the kind of focus that only comes from genuine betrayal. The Americans think this is a pause. Europe knows it’s a divorce.
