#Ethiopia federal police launch probe into recent #TikTok award attendees over ‘indecent attire’
The Ethiopian Federal Police said it has detained a group of young individuals who appeared on live television during the recently held “3rd G-Power TikTok Creative Award” wearing what police described as “revealing attire” that “violates the country’s cultural and moral norms.”
An “investigation is now underway”, the federal police said.
The attendees were featured during the live broadcast of the event in Addis Abeba wearing what the police said falls into “indecent clothing” and “unacceptable to the public.”
The police said in a statement this morning that the probe also covers those who “sponsored and organized the event”.
The individuals named include Wengelawit Gebre Endrias Berhe, Berket Tsegaye Jifar, Mekdim Dereje Mengistu, Grum Gezahegn Kechine and Yohannes Mekonnen H/Mariyam.
The Federal Police said the investigation will continue with a stated goal of “ensuring legal accountability” and curbing what it described as the “spread of imported cultural influences and clothing styles seen as harmful to societal values and to the younger generation.”
