The refugees are running away from war and poverty. Look at the countries of origin - Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Palestine, etc. What did they have in common? I noticed that Turnitin had not read several of my students' submissions. I later discovered they had used the software Canva. The documents saved in PDF format from Canva often cannot be read by Turnitin because they are exported as Image PDFs rather than text-based PDFs. The problem is that Turnitin requires highlightable, selectable text to generate a similarity report. The solution is to choose "PDF Standard" and ensure the Flatten PDF checkbox is unchecked.
