Our new Nature study, lead by @yuexing identifies a brief early-life window when skin dendritic cells sense common allergens and trigger inflammation right in the skin without migrating to lymph nodes. We define this in-situ activation state as peripheral immune inducer (pii)DC, and show it emerges because of a still-maturing HPA axis and low systemic glucocorticoids. #Naiklab 👉Key takeaways: 1. Early-life immunity plays by different rules. During this window, innate responses to allergens in skin are heighted. 2. Hormones shape immunity in real time. Developmental neuroendocrine states profoundly tune how the immune system reacts, and can set the stage for inflammatory disease. Shiga toxin-induced cell death—the underlying cause of a potentially fatal renal disease in children—occurs via pyroptosis, not apoptosis as previously thought, and is driven by an intriguing NLRP1->Caspase-3-> gasdermin E pathway. Congrats to Priya's lab! pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Our work on cellular RNA interactions with MAVS that promote antiviral signaling is finally live. So grateful to our indispensable collaborators as well as reviewers who helped to strengthen our work. #RNA #innateimmunity #virology @RamLabUW science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

m7GpppNm - VERY EXCITED to share my postdoctoral work in with @RamlabUW, now out @bioRxiv. We found that cellular RNA interacts with MAVS, the adaptor protein of the RIG-I-like receptor pathway, to promote antiviral signaling. "🧵": buff.ly/45bzXui

@Ella_Maru @uconnhealth @NatImmunol @NaturePortfolio Hi! We tried infecting adipocytes (3t3-glut4) but they were highly susceptible to infection, while myotubes are more resilient so we could study it better. Though, I would expect adipocytes to have faster kinetics b/c they have more GSVs that could be mobilized.

Check out this awesome article by Andrew during his time in @PENGHUAWANG3 's lab on GLUT4's role in innate immunity - it was a privilege to get to watch this work go from idea to reality during our PhDs in our many "window chats" and contribute to the project!
