If Heaven needed another Angel, he gained one of the very best last night. Our incredibly dear friend Sonny Smith, passed from the injuries he suffered in the multi-car crash last week on the way to Florida. While baseball brought Sonny into the lives of Grace, Tyler and I, it certainly did not define our relationship. Sonny was the biggest supporter, listener, advisor and friend to us and as I have learned, to so many more. In spite of any obstacles in his life, Sonny had a way of lifting up others. My family simply matched with Sonny. He loved Tyler, "Hollywood" as only Sonny called him. Tyler loved playing for Sonny and gave him his all every single time on the field. Sonny was one of his biggest believers, allowing Tyler to shine for many years under Sonny's leadership. During Grace's journey, he always called to check in and offer words of encouragement to help us all get through those difficult times. He had a way of talking to me that helped me to understand how and why Grace handled everything with such courage and conviction. As I have learned this week, Sonny made an amazing impression on so many people beyond the baseball field. HIs YMCA friends all loved him, people he saw at the grocery store, people all over town loved this man. Tyler and I are deeply heartbroken, but we also know one of the first to greet him at heaven's doors had to have been Grace. He will bring an incredible amount of happiness to heaven and all our friends up above. I believe the memories he left us all with will continue to help us get through the tough times as well We love you Sonny Smith. Until we meet again, thank you for all you meant to my family and to all those whose path you crossed When I see the arrangements, I will share.
