Eh, when I stopped smoking weed although all my friends did it wasn't hard. Quitting drinking totally might be hard if your social life revolves around it but that struggle is probably more about wanting to given what it offers.
Most people that aren't far don't try at all, their hunger ratio is just better calibrated to the calories they burn in a given day. I have never been fat in my life with basically zero regard for health consciousness, unless I was doing some macro counting BB diet...but if I want soda I drink I, if I want McDonalds I eat it. Most people being fat or not has very little to do with discipline, they are just following their natural impulses one way or another.
Imo compulsive self denial is it's own indulged impulse people have varying natural appetites for. Some people get off majorly on the idea of not doing things that feel good and make it a pillar of identity and meaning. If it works, great, but I don't really see it as much more than just another such impulse similar itself to gluttony if run off the rails.

Idgaf if people want to do drugs or not, but a lot of you should be less impressed with yourselves for not doing them. Anyone can not do something, that's not an accomplishment. If anything, the people that should be impressed with themselves are those that can do drugs safely and enjoyably without any negative consequences, which shows superiority over both addicts and overly paranoid teetotallers that can't have 3 drinks without totally destroying their lives, or being senselessly and superstitiously convinced they will.
