Nutritonal epi studies from Harvard prove 1 thing over & over again: Already-healthy, well-educated, white professionals deeply invested in the pursuit of health as a middle class virtue will always report eating foods *they've been told* are healthy. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

@wyadvd @eatlikeanimals @kevinnbass What shaped the food environment from within which these people are making food choices? Maybe they chose the chicken wings instead of the boneless breasts, but both exist in the food supply because of the Dietary Guidelines. Weird to think about

Many of us who work with patients with obesity start the conversation about stalls and regaining at the beginning. We know that most people regain, no matter what diet they used to lose weight. Why pretend otherwise? Better to prepare realistically.
DoctorTro@DoctorTro

@AudsDisease @lowcarbGP @BDA_Dietitians @DrAseemMalhotra @nicknorwitz @ProfTimNoakes @lowcarb_aus @drjasonfung @ahhite @rcgp @GetWildFit @EricEdmeades Understanding that we are all likely to regain weight at times is so critical Its most important to understand it’s not your fault and you can start to evaluate the best next step forward. Coaching/counseling IMVHO is critical It’s not the diet but the diet/fail mentality

I think "guidelines" have a lot to do with multiple government (or other) entities "speaking as a unified voice." When there's little chance for actual consensus (or enforcement) they signal "we're on this!"when we aren't.
bob@dsdtzero

@ibogost Perhaps when you have no intention or capability of enforcement but you want to empower those who might have that intention/capability you call it a “guideline”. As I understand it we get guidelines from those who can’t produce mandates, but may think smaller entities should.

@fatisourfriend @langfod Foucault does go on a bit about "conditions of possibility" which I would have woven into this post if I'd even heard of him (Foucault) at that point in my academic life. By the time i wrote my dissertation, I was competently able (I think) to use CoP as a theoretical frame.

There is so much cultural (and other) violence in one-size-fits-all national public health dietary guidelines:
Frédéric Leroy@fleroy1974

@WeDietitians @ahhite "Moreover, the [EAT-Lancet] Commission overlooks the socio-cultural practices of the people who will be eating these healthy diets, and the complexities of nourishment that are at the heart of kinship, social life, and caregiving"

@johnzahorik An excellent question. I asked it of one of the leaders of our professional organization. The answer I got was they wanted to keep "their seat at the table." And I thought, What is the point of a "seat at the table" if you can't do anything about what is being served???

That's actually the purpose of the GL! For industry to have standards & definitions to "game"! What other purpose could they possibly serve?! "No one follows them!" [Says every RD ever.]
MacroFour@MacroFour

@ZacharyWenger @GreedSpam That you are dreaming that ultra-processed foods will help folks meet the GL. We've tried that experiment in Australia with the 'health stars' & the food industry just gamed them (just as they've gamed the GL anyway). Even easier with plant-based protein foods.

@ZacharyWenger Can you *demonstrate* that "concordance" with dietary policy on SFA and fiber makes people "healthier" in ways that outweigh possible negative effects such "concordance" (whether on the individual or environmental levell) might have?

@WeDietitians The "show me the evidence that isn't based on coincidental relationships among food preferences, health beliefs & wishful thinking of white, married, female health professionals born before the atom bomb who happen to be already healthier than the rest of the population"?

A brilliant idea! I am putting together a holiday menu for my family's gathering & I believe I will include some version of this! ❤️ PS: I also keep getting requests for a Thai food teaching workshop (we are going to do a Polish-Ukranian pierog- making evening too!)

@MacroFour @ZipEmUp12 @MichaelAlbertMD But it isn't "research." At best, it is a lit review. People who do the original research know how to look for the flaws in the final product. The primary lesson that I took away from my doctorate work on nutrition epi is how weak our methods and underlying principles are.

@ZipEmUp12 @MichaelAlbertMD What's to fear about an informed patient making choices about their treatment? If they are a misinformed patient, sure your job is harder, but if you have mastery over the topic you should be able to correct that.

Can we stop using the phrase “do my own research?” No, what you are doing is NOT research. Research implies you have research question and are systematically reviewing the literature to limit biases to answer the intended ?. No one is doing this when they “do their research.”
