So today I continued to focus on some cleanup. The Stimuli system had become pretty messy with multiple types and utility functions defined all over the place. I cleaned it all up.
This was prompted because I added in a new stimuli type, cognition. So when the agent changes its goals, or completes a task, etc it will spawn a cognition stimuli in the system. This stimuli will be picked up by the perception system and used to help the agent understand and "see" what it is doing.
Cognition stimuli will be the first of internal stimuli. These are stimuli which are created internal to the agent, as opposed to external stimuli like perceiving another agent.
Internal stimuli open up all kinds of simulation possibilities. The agent could have hunger stimuli, or changes in emotion could be processed as internal stimuli.
I am currently refining the goal and planning system, which is very new. The agent has the ability to evaluate at every engine tick to decide if a plan needs to be changed, or if new goals need to be added. Plans are composed of subtasks in various states of progress and dependency on one another.
Was just thinking tonight that an agent could potentially spawn a clone of itself, or a simpler agent as a sub-process to execute specific tasks for itself. This would allow an agent to execute many plans in tandem.
Also contemplating, in no particular order:
- goal-based perceptions. When an agent perceives its stimuli and generates its perception narrative, and experiences, there is a lot of room for selective attention. Humans are naturally goal-oriented, and the goals that we have influence what we choose to pay attention to. Our goal system can deeply influence our agents perception.
- Multiple cognition loops. Cognition can be modelled as a few different separately running processes, like subconsciousness and consciousness. These two systems communicate via things like memory, experiences, etc. In ECS this is super easy to model. I am thinking of separating out things like goals, planning, and memory processing from the main perceiving/thinking/acting loop. This increases efficiency. As the subconsciousness system makes state changes, these will influence the self-conscious thinking. And the self-conscious perceptions and actions will in turn influence the subconscious systems.
- Human in loop on tasks. Any task can be marked as pending until a human gives feedback. This would in theory be very naturalistic, and the agent would be able to determine which task the answer was for (or would ask the human for clarification if it is confused)
- Relationship manager. Relationships are crucial to the ECS system and world. If an agent spawns a subagent, it would be great to not only have it be a child agent, but be given a description so the parent agent knows what that agent exists for. The system will be able to autonomously define new relationships too. So these will need to be stored and managed somewhere.
- Room changes. Giving agents the ability to not only update their own appearance, but also update the room description. Or, in theory, add new entities into the room with appearance descriptions that other agents can modify and perceive.
- Multi-room agents. When agents are in multiple rooms, there needs to be a way that they can perceive all the rooms they are in, and filter and prioritize stimuli.
Anyways, that is about it. Gonna go grind on stimuli, and planning.
