🇵🇹🐟Portugal has taken a significant step towards strengthening sustainable food production and the blue economy with the licensing of its first offshore aquaculture project. The Coralis project, located 15 km off the Algarve coast, has received Portugal’s first-ever Aquaculture Activity Title (TAA) for an offshore installation. Designed to operate in open Atlantic conditions, the floating platform is expected to reach a production capacity of up to 8,000 tonnes of fish per year. 🌊 The milestone comes at a time when Europe continues to rely heavily on imports. Around 85% of the seabass and seabream consumed in the EU are imported, while in Portugal, approximately 20,000 of the 25,000 tonnes consumed annually come from abroad. 🚀 Beyond the project itself, this licence signals the growing role offshore aquaculture could play in enhancing food security, reducing import dependency and supporting the sustainable development of Europe’s blue economy. The discussion is also gaining momentum at European level, with industry and innovation stakeholders calling for stronger support for aquaculture within future EU research, innovation and competitiveness programmes.
