I had to read this 4 times before I understood the New York Times is trying to compare Israel and the US’s war against the regime in Iran to Russia’s assault on Ukrainian civilians.
How can you compare the brutal officials who run the regime in Iran to Ukrainians?
Ukrainians are bombarded with the same drones, produced by the regime in Iran, as Israelis.
The regime in Iran helps Russia arm itself to bombard Ukrainian civilians.
That’s the “context” that actual journalism would provide.

In social media terms, the IDF is one of the most powerful militaries in the WORLD. It has 3.3m X followers, compared to @USArmy's 2.2, @BritishArmy's 400k, France's @armeedeTerre's 265k. As far as I can tell, only the Indian and Pakistani militaries have bigger X presences.
No military in history has been as closely scrutinized as the IDF, and the media appetite for minute-by-minute updates is insatiable. No other army in the world pumps out as many updates about what it's targeting. It's so much, I'm struggling to catch up.
Everything gets turned into sleek graphics... distributed across a plethora of social media accounts (X, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Telegram and more)... and every now and then, there's a really snarky video to wind up the trolls.
And these young soldiers (some career officers and lots of conscripts) do all this under incredible pressure to provide information quickly, to declassify intelligence that no other military is expected to provide, in the face of a colossal disinformation campaign to lie about everything they do.
There's a narrative war in parallel to the kinetic war, and the IDF Social Media team is in uncharted territory, trying to reinvent the rulebook of how to do wartime comms.
