For @techreview's "Power" issue, I traveled to Nebraska to look at how one electric utility is confronting the most challenging and dynamic moment the grid has ever faced. ter.li/AndrewB

@ShanuMathew93 Not really. The hands of AI makers are only "tied" by copyright in the sense that they are unwilling to pay fairly for their model inputs (as they pay fairly for their chips and power). That seems like a pretty core ideal of free markets.

Interesting point. American ideals built on enforcement of ownership rights versus the AI race priorities. “Lehane says beating China in the AI race is so important that we should not tie the hands of AI makers by limiting their use of data under copyright laws that China won't observe. That is a bit of a zero-sum game. And do you want the world built on autocratic, authoritarian AI, where there's not going to be any copyright, there's not going to be any fair use ... you're not going to have any freedoms?”

@JesseJenkins The energy usage numbers are all extremely fuzzy. Even the IEA and Goldman reports seem to trace back to random articles. I believe @JesseDodge is working on this.

Does anyone know a more precise breakdown of what share of total electricity use for a LLM is for training vs inference? Do we just not know yet since generative AI is just too new?
Jesse D. Jenkins@JesseJenkins

Q @AndlingerCenter Annual Meeting on energy for AI: how much can we move data centers to energy vs energy to data centers? Nvidia: When it comes to energy for AI, part of it is inference, which requires low latency and must be close to users, but part is for training, which can be done anywhere, including where the most available energy is. Meta: Training is a very large concentrated demand, while inference can be much more distributed close to load (similar to current data centers for cloud services). AMD: Even though it takes more energy to create a model, there are many users of the on a daily basis which could consume more in total.

because it's trending for insane reasons I will just plug @ajblum's book The Weather Machine as being a really genius look at how weather forecasting is a colossal technological achievement humanity should be proud of amazon.com/Weather-Machin…

@superwuster How weather is special, and how that reveals the limits of other domains, is very much the subject of The Weather Machine. The short answer is that it’s based on underlying physics, and an endlessly repeatable experiment. You can tweak your model and run it again tomorrow.

I've been thinking that weather forecasting gives us a pretty good sense of both the possibilities and limits of seeing the future in other domains where we are collecting lots of data. Or is weather special?

Does anyone know how much energy it takes to precondition a @Tesla for supercharging? This serves to speed up the charging but comes at a cost of energy. I'm curious how much money it costs the driver to precondition the battery just to get a faster charge.

@GigaSomerset @Tesla Wow, that's not insignificant. $2-$4 here in California just a charge a little faster. You

Do I know any Kansas City urbanists? I've read the history of redlining, freeways and dispersal there. Now I'm looking for great, walkable hoods, either legacy or emerging. Or local smarties to talk to. Thank you!

We now have amazing weather forecasts that can confidently predict tomorrow morning will be a snowy dangerous mess in NYC -- and STILL @NYCMayor rushes a confusing announcement with no clarity from @NYCSchools or @NotifyNYC.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

We're expecting winter weather overnight tonight which could lead to 5-8 inches of snow with locally higher amounts by the morning. As a result, all @NYCSchools will move to remote learning tomorrow. We will have more updates throughout the day — continue to follow @notifynyc for updated information.
