@seconds_0 He’s an expert at providing the strongest counter signal of any specialist of the 21st century and we should treasure him for that. I always pay close attention to things he deems useless.

Gary Marcus continues to go on podcasts as an ai expert and yet has this as his deepest level of analysis
Gary Marcus@GaryMarcus

What I am about to describe ain’t AGI; it’s a sign of a trillion dollar trainwreck. If I had told you in 2022 that the 2026 version of GPT (which by the way would only be GPT 5.5 and not GPT-6 or 7 like many people fantasized about) would still have strange quirks like inserting the word “goblins” in random places, y’all would have called me either “crazy” or “a hater” or both. “Scaling”, you would have shouted. “Deep learning is conquering walls!”, you would have said. And yet here we are. OpenAI can’t even align their systems well enough to get them to stop talking about goblins without putting a bunch of utterly hack-y goblin-specific crud in their system prompts like (and I am not making this up) “never talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or other animals or creatures unless it is absolutely and unambiguously relevant to the user’s query." Meanwhile, this nonsense varies by “persona”. An actual quasi-scientific report on their website reports, without humor, “Across all datasets in the audit, the Nerdy personality reward showed a clear tendency to score outputs to the same problem with “goblin” or “gremlin” higher than outputs without, with positive uplift in 76.2% of datasets.” Instead of actual computer science, we are left with alchemy. Might as well be chanting magic incantations. Good luck solving AI safety with this tech. 🙄

@seconds_0 The craziest is all the tweets about how obviously they meant it’s cause it was a digital image of the painting and not the painting and you’re just not like postmodern enough to get why that’s a distinction. Motherfucker shut up I studied art you can’t pull that bullshit on me.

im living for the indignant post hoc rationalization of the monet art. its such a beautiful encapsulation of the unwavering commitment to ideology even in the face of evidence

I'm expecting a Moore's Law for intelligence. Unfortunately, Moore's Law for intelligence implies conflict in a way that Moore's Law for transistors doesn't… Full Doom Debate with @BenGoertzel drops next week!

Monet's work exists as the exact same thing that is argued about AI art. Impressionism was praised precisely because it was an early development in the field of growing art from the medium rather than dominating the medium. It was called the equivalent of slop in its time, "degenerate" was the favorite word. Impressionists and subsequent post-realism art movements explored what paint does when it's more freely let to ooze around, blend in weird ways, etc. - efforts that culminated in work like Pollock just splashing paint at things. The anti-AI art argument regarding "not enough control" is the exact same argument that was used by the realists against Monet. The anti-AI art comments on the Monet @SHL0MS shared are RIGHT! MONET IS SLOP! But INTENTIONAL and cultivated SLOP is art!

It isn't unexpected that the focus of the Bun Rust rewrite is on the anti-Zig side more than anything, since the internet loves to hate. What is unexpected and unfortunate is that leadership within Bun hasn't tried to steer the conversation away from that at all. There are so many positive and interesting takeaways from this and I'm not really seeing any of them pushed as the primary message. A positive thing that hasn't been talked about at all is how far Bun came thanks to Zig. And even if you dump it now, its meaningful for how good Zig was to even build a product to this point and impact by any metric. I would've loved to see anyone in leadership say this. On the interesting side is how fungible programming languages are nowadays. Programming languages used to be LOCK IN, and they're increasingly not so. You think the Bun rewrite in Rust is good for Rust? Bun has shown they can be in probably any language they want in roughly a week or two. Rust is expendable. Its useful until its not then it can be thrown out. That's interesting! There's been a lot of talk about memory safety and no doubt Rust provides more guarantees than Zig. But I'd love to see a better analysis of why Bun in particular suffered so much rather than take the language-blame path. How could engineering as a practice been more rigorous to prevent this? What were the largest sources of crashes other programs should watch out for? How does Rust prevent them? How could Zig theoretically prevent them? That's interesting. I know the official blog post hasn't come out yet from Bun. But they're smart enough to know that that PR would stir up controversy the moment it opened, or they should've been. And plenty in the company have been tweeting and writing about it. Its somewhat telling to me in various dimensions what they chose to talk about first. I tend to think I'm pretty good at corporate PR/comms (especially when it comes to developer audiences) and I think appealing to the negative is never the right long term strategy; it does work to get short term eyes though.

It’s really funny how anti-AI art people are usually the most artistically illiterate people as proven by this Monet hoax.

@pfau If you’re trained from birth to view art specifically and exclusively from that perspective you may end up doing so yes. Some people in the past though thought of art as timeless and based on universal forms so some of us still cling to that outmoded form of thought.

@FishRaposo because people have a negative disposition toward AI generated images pretending to be genuine artworks. to fit the same analogy - if u frame a plant based dish as a meat based one the vegetarians arent gonna be changing sides, they dont want it so why would they take it

@Nekrolm All this will get better. The code was doing the same thing before in Zig, just didn’t have the type annotations to communicate it.

The fear mongering is hilarious, since people can’t actually point to anything breaking or being a problem in the Rust rewrite yet they’re like “omg can you believe they merged code NO ONE HAS READ?!” If 1000 developers merge 1 of 1000 PR’s then no one has read that code base either this is like the fundamental problem software engineer is attempting to solve how do people not understand this?
