@markmacleod_ 100%! I often went completely analog and scribbled notes in my notebook, then took photos and emailed them when I landed.

I am most productive on planes with no wifi. Back when I was a VC and banker, I would go to San Francisco regularly. The team always knew when I landed because their inboxes would blow up. I am not the type to watch movies on a plane. That is zen, focus time for me. Often I would have bloodshot eyes getting off those flights because I was so focused. Wifi is commonplace on planes now, but there is something to be said about not being interrupted and not being able to go online. It's made me think about how to replicate this focus without racking up more travel. I am experimenting now with doing big blocks of focus work on my iPad and away from my desk. And with no wifi. For creative, deep thinking kinds of work, deep-thinkingI find these constraints bring more focus.

@Sonos I don’t want new features. I want it to respond immediately like it used to, and like every other app on my phone does. A 2 minute delay on loading a track is unacceptable

@Kellblog Super helpful for those of us who started our careers in professional services, one of the few contexts in which ‘pacesetting’ works. Was transformational reading for me in 2008, fresh out of McKinsey.

@ChrisHeaslip I think it started well before COVID. Culture clearly shifted from priority on customers to priority on near term profitability - and delivered what was intended tbf. COVID exacerbated issue.

@JemTraylen @MBIEgovtnz Follow up question @JemTraylen : I’d be interested in more insight on the underlying drivers. Many would seem to be more driven by the ambition, complexity, and efficiency of govt programs rather than population. Eg more people doesn’t require more policy analysts does it?

A lot of the smaller agencies such as MfE more than doubled in size, but among the top 10 in headcount, the clear winner is @MBIEgovtnz which has 87% more FTEs than it did 6 years ago. I'm reserving judgement as to whether that's good or bad: these are just the raw numbers 🤔🤔🤔

The public service workforce has grown by about a third in the six years to June – roughly spanning the time the outgoing Labour government was in power. @JemTraylen reports. businessdesk.co.nz/article/policy…

@markmacleod_ I switched to green tea + citrus first think in the morning. Feels lighter and more clear headed. Still enjoy a coffee but it’s not a dependency to jumpstart the day.

My new favourite thing about living in Auckland: I’ve discovered a dvd rental store. I know what you’re thinking. They also sell second-hand dvd players! Browsing titles on shelves feels sooo good 💆‍♀️ Never going back to the doom scroll. maps.app.goo.gl/gD8LvZ8usgDPU1…

@EricCrampton @NZGreens It’s a pretty important part of the overall policy IMO, esp as it was positioned as necessary to prevent avoiding the wealth tax

@ajfala @NZGreens Not sure the Greens ever gave a number they figured would be hit by the trust tax.; thought the 0.7% was meant to be the wealth tax alone.

@EricCrampton @NZGreens And it still doesn’t include the trust tax that applies from the first dollar! Estimated 300-500k trusts in NZ. Reasonable people can disagree about policy but let’s start with the correct facts…
