This just simply is not true Paul Skenes was always the #1 in that class. Dylan Crews just also happened to be extremely touted as well Both were seen as gems from the same power program. 1A & 1B situation To act like Skenes wasn’t the top of the crop is revisionism itself
Andrew Flax@ajflax

Something very interesting has happened with 2023 draft revisionism, which is that everyone has forgotten Skenes was not the consensus #1 guy. He took a huge leap as a pro. All the pre-draft rumors had the Pirates looking at Langford or Crews.

@ajflax Skenes was the pretty widely recognized as the #1 guy. That class was loaded and there were some talk for Crews, but Skenes was pretty clearly the guy. The Buccos nearly fumbled it but Crews refused to go to Pittsburgh.

Baseball America ranked Dylan Crews ahead of Paul Skenes in the 2023 Draft. One of those guys couldn’t make the roster of a rebuilding team and the other is the reigning Cy Young Award winner and one of the best young pitchers ever. I think they need to answer for that.

@ajflax would be good, but by the time the draft came around, there were lots of questions about how high his ceiling was.

Fun thought exercise: In the 2023 and 2024 drafts, a player Rizzo openly loved went one pick before him. If those drafts fall differently and he gets to draft Paul Skenes and Konnor Griffin, does it save his job? If so, does he get fired when he takes Ethan Holliday #1 in '25?

@georgerlewis This is a great reality check. I'm slightly more optimistic about the bats than I am pessimistic about the arms.

One thing about the lack of offense: I’m not worried. I also don’t think they’ll be an elite pitching staff. If their 1st place ERA doesn’t convince you, don’t let the last place OPS. The Mets were 30th last year in ST OPS. They were 7th in April. It’s not really predictive.

I'm struggling to see the logic of this trade. Vivas is a poor defender, especially at third, who has struggled to be a league average hitter at AAA. He's out of options and was about to be DFA'd, and the Nats are close to the front of the waiver line. Why give up a prospect?

A little bit ago, this interview of Butera by @granthpaulsen and @funnydanny caught my attention. Butera touched on algorithmic lineup design, which is something that I'm very interested in. Today, I wrote a little bit about what that looks like: georgerlewis.substack.com/p/what-will-bl…

@JasonVorhe34254 I don't think Wiemer is the guy on the block; it's Franklin. They didn't plan to be sending Crews down, and now they've got a ML bench spot they didn't anticipate.

@ajflax Hope so but don’t overthink it, they grabbed Wiemers off waivers for a reason. They should def be active on waivers though, agree with that

Stray thought on the Crews thing: I'm guessing there's someone on the Opening Day roster who isn't in the org right now. They probably want another OF and to send down Franklin, plus another reliever potentially. I think they'll be active on waivers.

Hassell is surprising. I guess they didn't want both their pinch hitters to be LHH, and they picked Tena over Hassell because they needed another IF. There are now 14 bats left in camp, and 13 will make the team. Either 1) one of Wiemer/Franklin will or 2) they'll make a move.
Nationals Communications@NationalsComms

The Nationals have made the following roster moves: Optioned to Triple-A Rochester: -RHP Julian Fernandez -RHP Josiah Gray -OF Robert Hassell III Reassigned to Minor League camp: -LHP Zach Penrod

Chewing on this a little: I think it might be more about Ruiz and seeing what you've got there. Can you coach him up to be a passable defender and rein in the free-swinging approach? Worth evaluating him before you cut ties (and hand Ford the reins).
