The idea behind appointing a tactician like Tuchel was to break England’s long-standing tournament habits of both panicking when in front in big games and simply hoofing it from the goalkeeper when trailing. He has managed neither - this is every England team I’ve ever watched.

A tale of two managers. Scanoli’s substitutions worked a treat. Baffling how Tuchel approached the game at 1-0 up. So negative with both his tactics and his changes and paid the price. Dropped so deep. Completely surrendered the initiative. That was Southgate like.

Regardless of the merits of the England subs, you simply can't have that many defenders on the pitch and then: 1) give a known goalscorer as much time and space as he wants on the edge of the box after a corner 2) have nobody defending the back post from a cross Rubbish.

Never seen a team like this Argentina side. No matter how limited they look or how poor they are facing their own goal, they'll simply score however many goals they need right at the end through sheer willpower and aggression. Astonishing to watch every time. An amazing group.

To answer the questions: The moment the ball makes contact with an outside object (in this case the camera cable) play becomes dead and should be restarted with a dropped ball. VAR could have intervened as it was in the immediate attacking phase of play that directly led to England's goal. FIFA, meanwhile, say they’ve "checked the data - no peak on the graph from the connected ball heartbeat sensor" 🙃

I love football. I love late drama. I love comebacks. I love knowing that anything is possible and feeling like we’re watching a steady stream of some of the greatest games ever. I do not love how we are expected to ignore the inconsistencies in officiating and the interventions from VAR, which have largely been heavily weighted towards certain teams and its players. If you’ve watched and followed everything in this World Cup and are still subscribed the idea that it’s all fair, delusionville must be a lovely place to reside.
