@JohnHealey_MP @GoodGrowthFdn How about removing all the non mod items from budget like pensions / mi5/6 gchq budgets and nuclear deterrent so we get the true level of what we spending rather than this fake attempt to hit 2%

The rising defence investment under this Government comes with a fundamentally new Labour approach. A Back British mission to boost skills, productivity and innovation across our UK communities. At @GoodGrowthFdn this week, I laid how.

@FennellJW I read They told the builders what the budget was - so all the builders tried to grab as much of it as possible - the guys who did hs1 kept the budget secret - result brought in on time and under budget.

An absolute travesty that we turned what is in reality a rather short length of railway line into a vast mega project costing as much as the NASA Artemis moonshot. Government, local government, industry and charities are all to blame for trying to make it more than it is.
HS2 Ltd@HS2ltd

Last year was one of HS2's most productive yet – completing six major milestones ahead of schedule. Here's what we achieved: 🚇 All tunnelling between Old Oak Common and Birmingham Curzon Street completed 🏗️ 80% of major structures (bridges, viaducts and tunnels) complete or under construction ✅ 70% of major earthworks finished.

@FennellJW Yes seems like the bloke in charge knows what he’s doing ! We just need to make pay and conditions good enough to retain and attract staff and increase the numbers and ships. This shows we are not just short on frontline kit but also the enablers like rfa and logistics etc

@scottyeders We should have built a combined fleet of harriers - so added the blue vixen radar from sea harrier to gr9. And if need be raised the cockpit as per sea harrier (although gr9 looks on par).

🛩️ TheHarrier GR9 was the pinnacle of the Harrier II family — upgraded GR7 with advanced avionics, new weapons (Brimstone, Paveway IV, Sniper pod), and serious close air support punch. V/STOL aircraft that flew combat missions over Afghanistan before its sad retirement in 2011.

Am sure there's a reason why Rivet Joints aren't being escorted by Typhoons after one was nearly shot down over the Black Sea, but I don't know what it is...
Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧@DefenceHQ

A @RoyalAirForce Rivet Joint aircraft operating in international airspace over the Black Sea was dangerously intercepted by Russian military jets – flying as close as six metres and triggering onboard emergency systems. Despite these reckless manoeuvres, RAF crew completed their mission safely. The aircraft was conducting a routine flight in support of @NATO operations, contributing to the security of the Alliance’s eastern flank. The RAF Rivet Joint is a specialist reconnaissance aircraft equipped with advanced electronic surveillance sensors, providing critical situational awareness to help safeguard NATO territory. This incident reflects ongoing Russian aggression and heightened military activity across Eastern Europe and the High North – the UK will continue to stand firm with its allies, united in the defence of NATO.

The actions of Russian pilots towards an unarmed @RoyalAirForce aircraft are dangerous and unacceptable. I pay tribute to the outstanding bravery of the RAF crew, who completed their mission safely. This will not deter the UK’s commitment to defend our @NATO allies.

@JohnHealey_MP Then there is the fiddling of the figure to make it look like your spending 2.5 % - pensions / security services budget which should be under home office / foreign office etc etc it’s all fiddling the books to make jo public think your spending it oh yeah Ukraine coming out of it

Record defence investment, new defence deals, and an end to years of Tory hollowing out. This is Labour, delivering for defence, delivering for Britain 🇬🇧

What’s cooler — the Royal Navy Sea Harrier or the RAF Harrier GR9 Both absolute Harrier royalty, but which one wins in your book?

@FennellJW I am not convinced the tank is finished on the battlefield. We are in the usual round of new lethal tech (drones) vs defensive measures against them. At somepoint tech will evolve to defeat drones and be mounted on tanks. It’s the usual story of war technology.

There will be a temptation to rebuild with more of the same, more Typhoon, Challenger 3 and Type 31 frigates, but the evidence is all around us that the future of warfare will be different. The DIP is a generational opportunity to build for the warfare we see in Iran and Ukraine.navylookout.com/first-sea-lord…

One of the challenges of reporting UK defence at the moment is the dramatically different outcomes in defence procurement. There's scandals like our nuclear submarine availability - and then there's things like this developed swiftly and fielded to combat squadrons with few apparent issues
UK Defence Journal@UKDefJournal

The RAF has integrated APKWS onto Typhoon jets operating over the Middle East. The rocket system, built by BAE Systems and tested at QinetiQ ranges, went from development to combat-ready status on the platform in under two months.

@akcrisp @Always_Boots @PaulKennard18 @UKDefJournal Gunruns on drones has proven to be a catastrophically poor idea. Takes WAY too much time per drone, much less stored kills in practical application, and is of extreme danger to the plane itself as demonstrated from several lost airframes from debris.

@Always_Boots @PaulKennard18 @UKDefJournal Now closure rate could be in issue granted but there has to be a far more efficient (cheaper) method and indeed abundant method of shooting them down even than cheaper rockets - swarms of several hundred need electronic / frying of electronics to counter
