The question of whether Sola Scriptura is in the Fathers is quite simple, yet misconstrued by propagandists and sophists. Simply inquire into whether the doctrine of the universal Church is subject to private judgement by believers, can err, etc. All (99%) the quotes Protestants bring forward are distractions e.g. bishops can err but Scripture alone cannot, supposed traditions must be tested by Scripture, Scripture contains all things necessary for salvation. Catholics affirm all this. The same Fathers affirm that the faithful ought to believe according to the teaching of the universal Church, and departures from such teaching constitute heresy, since they prefer their own perverse reading of Scripture over that of the Church.

Fr. George Turnbull, S.J. to Robert Baron: "My Baron, if you are a man and a lover of truth, you will not be indignant at my candor; nor will you harangue in your pulpit before an unlearned crowd in my absence; rather, in the sight of Angels you will seek from God pardon for so many injuries and errors with which you have bespattered your disputation. Errors so many and so grave could neither be concealed by me without the danger of prevarication, nor hidden from you without a greater loss to yourself. My purpose in exposing them was not to harm you but to prevent you from harming others; to correct one who errs; to instruct one who is blind — whom I had observed straying from first principles as if from the very gate; and to bring you to a repentance salutary for your soul."

@dissolution1806 The former is a can of worms to get into, but the latter is easily resolved by reading G-L’s De Revelatione.

When you encounter an objection you cannot resolve, the habit of divine faith ensures you that the Church has not erred, but merely your understanding of her teachings. Anything else indicates one lacks the habit of divine faith.

Is Sola Scriptura cooked guys? One tough "sola Scriptura" text I see cited by Protestants in the Church Fathers comes from a Pseudo-Chrysostom homily on Matthew. This is a different work than St. John's undisputed homilies on Matthew, which are found in Migne P.G., vol. 57. Instead, these are dubious and are found in P.G., vol. 56. The quote teaches that the Church will enter a near-universal apostasy and be engulfed with heresy, at which point believers will be expected to locate the true Church by way of Scripture alone: “'Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains...' That is to say, when you see a godless heresy, which is the army of Antichrist, standing in the holy places of the church, at that time 'let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,' that is, let those who are in Christianity hasten to the Scriptures... And why does he order all Christians to hasten to the Scriptures at this time? Because at this time, ever since a heresy lay hold of those churches, there can be no other test of true Christianity or any other refuge of Christians who want to know the truth of the faith than the divine Scriptures... Therefore, if someone wishes to know what the true church of Christ is, how will he know it amid the confusion of such similarity unless he learns it only through the Scriptures?” [1] While I haven't exactly made up my mind yet on how much I'd concede here as being problematic for our view (since I've found a couple of other points in the work that lessen the force of this quote), I made an interesting discovery. In the homily before, no. 48, pseudo-Chrysostom calls Nicaean orthodoxy a heresy that was in opposition to the true church of Christ: "The heresy of the Homoousians ('Hæresis Homoousianorum') not only opposed the church of Christ but also all the heresies that do not think in a similar way." [2] I briefly glanced over some editors from the 19th century and they also attributed the work to an anonymous Arian. It seems he was unhappy with the "church" being overcome by [what he considered] heresy. I'm simply saying this quote (which is definitely challenging to reconcile) coming from an Arian is not a great look for Protestants who cite this often. [1] James A. Kellerman, trans., Incomplete Commentary on Matthew (Opus imperfectum), ed. Thomas C. Oden, vol. 2, Ancient Christian Texts (Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2010), 382-83 (PG 56, 909). [2] Ibid., 376 (PG 56, 903).

Only listened up to @emuse1955 opening statement so far and his fundamental theology is fantastic. This is why Catholics who engage Protestants need to be reading Scheeben, Franzelin, Lagrange, etc. youtube.com/live/nn8BYrFdM…
