Just feel If Vietnam can backfill 80% to 90% of the Walmart shelf that was originally made in China. We will not see any price increase and can see how China comes back to the table. Vietnam can’t side with China on this one because China will not need the excess supply from Vietnam.
Sure, a 104% tariff on iPhones imported from China is bad news. The good news is that Apple has already diversified its production to India and Vietnam, and no American president would be dumb enough to say put 46% tariffs on Vietnam
$AAPL to spend $500B in capex over 4 years, or $125 billion per year. That's up 12-fold from the $10B it currently spends each year, and will wipe out 100% of the company's free cash flow for the foreseeable future.
In other words, say goodbye to buy backs and $AAPL EPS growth! This is a company that's been stuck with less than 3% growth in net income over the last 3 years, and only managed to cover up its earnings stagnation through $100B in annual share repurchases.
Now, the capital for buybacks will instead be used to uproot a cheap manufacturing base overseas and replace it with much more expensive, American-built production capacity.
Perhaps good for the country long-term, but horrible for $AAPL investors paying 35x earnings for a no-growth company that just became a lot more capital-intensive.
Maybe investors will look past the zero earnings growth and exploding capital requirements and keep buying shares at a 40% premium to the overall market... or maybe not.
Buffett might not look so foolish for dumping his shares at $170 after all
