Happy Birthday, Tom Slick, Jr. (born May 6, 1916)! This NASA image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, which launched in 1990, shows a colorful cluster of stars at the center of the Milky Way galaxy as it appeared on May 6, 2012. ow.ly/fgiY50YVyoc

@AstroMikeMerri @plutosavior @AlanStern @DrPhiltill @nasaman58 @b0yle Whereas this argument paints science in a great light.... Tbh there is no logical reason Pluto shouldn't be a planet. The only reason they made that distinction was do that the solar system didn't end up with 20 planets but it's not actually based on anything substantial.

65 years ago today, Alan Shepard became the first American in space when he launched on a suborbital mission aboard his Mercury "Freedom 7" spacecraft. The mission lasted 15 minutes and 22 seconds. More on Shepherd's history making flight: s.si.edu/42bARq0

#ThatsNoMoon That's Charon, the other 1/2 of this double planet!😄Though often called the largest satellite of the Pluto System, Charon is 1/2 my radius & 1/8 my mass. We orbit a common center of gravity which lies outside both of us. This meets the criteria for a binary system🤩

Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter was the second American to orbit the Earth. He also served as an aquanaut, spending 30 days in 1965 living and working in a sea-floor habitat 205 feet below the surface. Carpenter was born on this day in 1925.

I saw Clyde Tombaugh speak at the Stellafane meeting in Springfield, Vermont in the late 1980s. “De-planetizing” Pluto was not only scientifically silly, but offensive to his memory and the humanity of science. @AlanStern , @rookisaacman.
Senator Jerry Moran@JerryMoran

In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh from Burdett, Kansas, discovered Pluto, & I appreciate @NASAAdmin’s interest in reclassifying Pluto as a planet and restoring credit for the discovery of the planet to Clyde Tombaugh.⬇️

@plutosavior @StartsWithABang @DrPhiltill @nasaman58 I have given up on Siegel. He is not a scientist in any real sense, evidence matters not to him. Argument matters mot. Logic matters not. He only hears what he wishes to hear, which means what he agrees with.

The science case for why Pluto still isn’t a planet Sure, we lived in a simpler time when we had 9 planets, including Pluto. But we've learned a whole lot since 1929, and can't in good conscience ignore it to suit our comforts. bigthink.com/starts-with-a-…

Scientist shocks world demanding everyone just shut up about Pluto! 😀 Actually, there's a VERY cool science reason why Pluto was kicked out of the planet club. It's all about the rest of the solar system. Today's @ForbesTech column forbes.com/sites/adamfran…
