Max now thinks it’s likely that the precise vases in private collections are modern reproductions of ancient vases. This is a complete 180 from where he was just a few months ago. I based my presentation on his work at CS25. It’s a big shift for Max. Here’s some thoughts/data that keep me open to both possibilities (modern/ancient) -The most precise, least weathered vessels from excavations went from archeologists (practicing partage) straight to the dealers in the antiquities markets, and then into private collection without dig site paper trails. This is known fact. This maximized profits for archeologists, museums were fine with bulk, and often damaged goods, unable/unwilling to pay for the highest quality pieces like private collectors. So the most precise and beautiful are in private collections today, but are they are ancient? -the museum pieces and the precision pieces both have interior tool marks that are similar. They both have polished exteriors, but the polish on the precision pieces is generally much more shiny and the exterior is more round. This seems to be modern polishing, either because it’s fake or because they were cleaned up and made to look less weathered in modern times. - It may be impossible to conclusively state when any specific vessel was manufactured or touched up. If we can find someone who’s made one of these in modern times, that would be a good start to proving sine/any of the precision vases may be modern. It’s been incredible to dive into the vase topic for the last few years. I’ve learned a lot, I’m still happy to talk about it with guests or on other pods with anyone but I’m not actively researching the topic anymore. There still more questions than answers. 99% of museum pieces remain unscanned so there’s more exploring to do for people interested in this topic.
